Jake Gibbons of Bolles School Gives Commitment to Yale University

Bolles School’s Jake Gibbons has committed to the Yale University Class of 2019* telling SwimSwam, “I chose Yale because while living in Connecticut I saw firsthand how Coach Tim Wise developed this team into a real contender in the Ivy League. Academics have always been important to me, but my time training at The Bolles School taught me the importance of maintaining a tradition of success in and out of the pool. Yale offers a situation where I can achieve the goals I have as a swimmer and as a student. Furthermore, I could not be more excited to continue swimming with my best friends Joey Carbone and Scott Bole for four more years.”

Gibbons is a versatile swimmer who should add strength to the Bulldogs’ back, IM, and mid-distance freestyle groups. At the recent Florida High School Class 1A Championship, Gibbons contributed to Bolles School’s team victory with a fourth-place finish in the 500 free and a ninth in the 100 back. His top times include:

100y back: 51.10 100m back: 58.49
200y back: 1:48.75 200m back: 2:06.42
500y free: 4:32.64 400m free: 4:12.27
1000y free: 9:32.21 800m free: 8:28.37
1650y free: 15:48.81 1500m free: 16:41.32
400y IM: 4:04.73 400m IM: 4:36.60

“I have complete trust in Coach Wise to help me be the swimmer I want to be. I believe this Yale Class of 2019 has the talent needed to end the reign of the Crimson and Tigers over the Ivy League.”

(Harvard and Princeton take note; the gauntlet has been thrown down.)

Gibbons will join fellow 2019 commits:

*DISCLAIMER: Gibbons has not yet been officially accepted to Yale. As is true with all Ivy League schools, Yale’s Admission Office will not send its acceptance letter until the beginning of December, along with those of all Early Action candidates. The procedure for a recruited athlete like Gibbons is for Admissions to review his transcript and SAT scores, “support (his) application for admissions in the fall,” issue a Likely Letter, then offer him acceptance into the class of 2019.

Interesting! But Yale should worry about beating Penn first.

I don’t have a dog in this fight, but I checked their archives and Yale has beaten Penn in 3 straight dual meets and has finished ahead of them at championships 3 of the last 4 years, the year they finished behind Penn (2014) was only by 63 points. Penn has a good team as well, and bottom line is I seriously doubt either of these teams are working their ***** off and coaches are recruiting the studs that they are by selling a vision of 3rd place…. there’s no need to throw digs at Yale or bring Penn into this. I think it’s great to see an excited recruit throw it out there, good for him!! And did I… Read more »
