James Guy Makes Return to Millfield, Will Train with World Champ Matt Richards

In the SwimSwam Podcast dive deeper into the sport you love with insider conversations about swimming. Hosted by Coleman HodgesGarrett McCaffrey, and Gold Medal Mel Stewart, SwimSwam welcomes both the biggest names in swimming that you already know, and rising stars that you need to get to know, as we break down the past, present, and future of aquatic sports.

SwimSwam caught up with 2023 World Champion James Guy, who recently announced his departure from long-time training home Bath National Centre. Guy, not happy with his individual results since the Tokyo Olympics, decided a change in stimuli was what would be best for his career.

This has taken him back to his old stomping grounds of Millfield, although the people around him are very different. He will be under the guidance of performance coach Ryan Livingstone and Director of Swimming Euan Dale, whereas at his last stint in Millfield he was training with Jol Finck. Millfield is also the (relatively) new home of Matt Richards, who won gold in the 200 free and teamed with Guy, Tom Dean, and Duncan Scott to win gold in the 800 free relay at the 2023 World Championships.

Guy expresses his gratitude for his time at Bath and excitement for what is to come during his time in Millfield. He also gives his perspective on his recent engagement and best friend Adam Peaty‘s renewed outlook on swimming.

I truly hope next summer at Paris the GB 4×200 relay goes the 6:57ish they are capable of. If they can do that, it’ll probably stand a decade.

I’d love them to break the WR. I’ll never forget Dunks’ face at the end of the race when he realised they’d just missed it in Tokyo.

Very sensible decision from Guy.

Could we see a Millfeild 1-2 at Olympic Trials in the 200Free?

Richards and Dean first 2. Dunks and Jimmy 3rd and 4th. No idea of the order.

What if the coach says forget the fly events, let British swimming prime Jacob for the medley relays…can JG become a 1-2 🇬🇧 and global 1-3 next year in 100 and 200 free?

Yes, I’m interested to hear/see what Jimmy does. In the interview he said he wants to focus on the 100 ‘fly, but to be honest, I thought his focus would be the 4 x 2 free relay, and he would drop the ‘fly. See how he gets on at Millfield, I suppose.

Is Millfield bound to British swimming’s goals, or is the individual’s training aim individualised without adhering to where the association needs you in order to achieve their own goal… like I assume bath and luffbra would ( somewhat) be?

How amazing the National Centres don’t individually program!

You have to leave to get specific needs met. Says more about the coaches their to be honest though.

Jacob was 51.5 on the last day in the medley relay. James Guy will drop, he’s done it so many times before in Olympic year!

They do have pretty similar personalities and clearly get along in interviews so not super surprised, this interview kind of shows that:

I’m pleased Jimmy isn’t a fan of tattoos though.
