James Guy Is ‘Over The Moon’ With 400 Free British Title (Video)

2016 BRITISH NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS/OLYMPIC TRIALS

The reigning World Champion in the 200m freestyle event won the men’s 400m freestyle final in Glasgow, as James Guy clinched the 2016 British National title in a time of 3:43.84. The 400m free is just one of 3 individual events in which Guy is competing, which also includes the 200m free and 100m butterfly further along in the meet.

Regarding tonight’s 400m victory swim, Guy says he “felt like he was floating” when taking out the first half of his swim in a split of 1:49.41. That sentiment may send shudders through the competitors looking to face the 20-year-old in that shorter individual freestyle event later in the week.

Guy’s time tonight sits just off the 3:43.75 lifetime best and British National Record he set in his silver medal performance in Kazan.

Guy now stands as the 2nd-fastest 400m freestyler in the world this season, positioned only behind Australia’s 19-year-old Mack Horton who cranked out a gold medal-winning time of 3:41.65 earlier this week at the Australian Trials. With his first place finish and automatic-qualifying time, Guy has just qualified for his first Olympic Games.
