NEW ORLEANS – James Madison swim & dive swept the Sun Belt Conference weekly awards the league announced on Thursday morning, as senior Madison Cottrell was named the Swimmer of the Week and freshman Kate Vitolo was tabbed the Diver of the Week.
The Dukes competed at East Carolina last week in a dual meet.
Cottrell earned her first weekly award of the season by taking first in the 100 Fly before finishing second in the 100 Back. Her time of 57.20 in the 100 Fly was the third fastest in the league so far this season, while her 56.60 time in the 100 Back is the fastest this season across the Sun Belt. Cottrell also was a part of the first place 200 Medley Relay team that won with a time 1:44.86. Her Fly split of 24.85 was the fastest of the entire meet and the relay time is the fastest in the league so far this season.
Vitolo earned her second weekly award of the season in her second collegiate meet. She won the 3-meter board with an NCAA Zone qualifying score of 307.13 before finishing third on the 1-meter with another NCAA Zone qualifying score of 267.75. In four diving events this season, she has recorded an NCAA Zone qualifying score in all four.
The Dukes will be back in the water on Saturday, Nov. 4 as they welcome Marshall to Savage Natatorium with diving beginning at 9:45 a.m. and swimming starting at noon.
