James Magnussen Chooses New Coach, and It’s a Curveball

Speculation has flown since James Magnussen split with his coach Brant Best in September, with every big-name coach in Australia being the subject of rumors.

Magnussen has flown in the face of them all and chosen instead brothers Mitch and Lach Falvey, young coaches also in their 20’s who share a hometown with the Australian Record holder Magnussen.

Mitch Falvey’s current job is at the Ravenswood School for Girls in New South Wales. Previous stops on his resume include as owner of “Swim Win & Grin,” a mobile swim school, and as an assistant coach at the Pymble Ladies’ College from 2004-2010.

He’s been quietly building up a reputation in Australia, having worked recently with a few junior Australian team camps and putting a few swimmers onto youth and junior teams.

The final announcement of this move has been awaiting approval from Swimming Australia, who first required a trial period under the Falvey brothers.

Maybe this will be good for him. An opportunity to get away from the spot life and get back to some grass roots training. Perhaps he got a little to fancy and high tech with his training with Brant Best and he wanted to get back to just putting in the hard work. All the Best to Magnussen

Going to wish Mags all the best. Really hope he can overcome some of his mental demons.

I’m going to do a Bobo here and just put it out there that one man I do think could work magic with Mags would be Philippe Lucas. But a shame that it’s never going to materialize

If he were going to France, he would go to Marseille. Lucas is a middle-distance/distance whisperer. He’s going to have Sharon van Rouwendaal nipping at Katie Ledecky’s heels within the next few years. Imagine Magnussen and Manaudou training together with Barnier. Those sessions would be crazy.

Gotta be happy . Gotta look back & think – yeah , I directed my career. I have to think this sounds fun.

The only thing is for him to train on Sydney’s northern beach area because that was what I advised in an August post , because I am thinking of declaring myself a seer. Elections , wars , swim careers , you name it , I can do it.
