James sets national 200 back record, Golden West, Santa Rosa win California Community College titles

The CCCAA (California Community College Athletic Association) national championships saw a national 200 back record go down while Golden West continued their win streak on the men’s side.

Brandon James of Diablo Valley broke the CCCAA record for the second time in just a few weeks, going 1:44.95 to win the CCCAA title on Saturday.

James originally set the mark at his conference meet in April, going 1:45.18. That helped his Diablo Valley crew finish second overall on the men’s side.

The men’s win went to Golden West, which has now put together a bit of a run in the CCCAA. 2015 marked the team’s third-consecutive title, and they won by over 70 points.

They capped off that team win by taking two titles on the final night, including the closing event. That 400 free relay of Bradley Toland, Dalton Kenefick, Jeremy Grden and Fletcher Norseen went 3:02.12 for the win.

Gabriel Hernandez won the 200 fly one event earlier, going 1:48.69. That was his second win of the weekend, after he took the 400 IM on day 2 (3:54.49). Also winning an event for Golden West was Toland, who took the 100 fly in 48.59 on day 2.

Santa Rosa won the women’s title in a true team effort, taking just two event titles. The first came courtesy of diver Logan Williams, who triumphed on 1-meter with a score of 202.30 on opening day. A day later, Christine Lewis won the 100 breast in 1:05.10.

That helped Santa Rosa top Orange Coast by 25 points for the team trophy. Orange Coast was led by double winner Rebecca Aguilar, who took the 50 free (23.71) and 100 free (51.26) and helped the 200 medley relay team win.

Good to see that the Orange Empire conference Championships was observed. Golden West is part of this conference. Wonder how it was possible to accomplish getting an observation. A few years back Mary Jo Swalley refused to approve an observation for the South Coast Conference. Unfortunately, according to the USA Swimming website, only the Orange Empire Conference Championship was observed and none of the other conferences.

Congratulations to Brandon James!
