The CSCAA has released their January 12th poll. Not much has changed since the last poll, which was released shortly before most squads went into hibernation for their winter breaks.
The most impactful meet was the January 8th battle between Tennessee and Virginia, when the then lower-ranked Volunteers swept their Cavalier counterparts. This win moved the Tennessee men up from fifteen in the last poll to #10 in the current poll, while the Virginia men slid back to #14. The Tennessee women also jumped to #10 from their prior twelfth-place positioning.
The other meet that saw things moving and shaking was the Indiana men’s upset victory over then-number eight Michigan. The Hoosiers climbed up the standings to #12, while Michigan slid all the way back to #13 after some are questioning whether a Michigan team loaded with freshman can hang with the rest of the top 10.
On the women’s side, there were even fewer changes, aside from Tennesee’s upward mobility. #12 Auburn switched spots with Tennessee and dropped from tenth, despite a World-Class demonstration by Ariana Vanderpool-Wallace in Dubai. The Cal women mysteriously went from being alone in fifth to being tied for 4th with USC. This is likely the effect of the polling methodology, where not every member coach necessarily submits a ballot for every release.
There are a ton of exciting dual meets in the coming weeks, especially as the Pac-10 gets into the meet of their conference schedule. The (#1M/#3W) Texas Longhorns will head East down I-10 to meet up with the (#6M/#12W) Auburn Tigers on Thursday and Friday, followed by loop through Athens to face the (#11M/#1W) Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday. This is a well-timed trip while their home pool plays host to the Austin Grand Prix. This is all a lead-up to the last weekend of January, when the (#3M/#7W) Arizona Wildcats will travel to Austin for a two-day dual.
Other big meets before the next poll, which will be released February 17th, are listed below. Here’s a hint, make plans to be in Tucson the weekend of January 21st. A lot of teams have a chance to strengthen their positions or give up a lot of ground between now and February.
