Behind the newly-minted Asian record-setter Shoma Sato in the men’s 200m breaststroke at last month’s Japanese Olympic Trials, Ryuya Mura stunningly claimed 2nd place in a huge personal best. Mura’s 2:07.58 beat out former world record holder Ippei Watanabe, who was expected to snag one of the top 2 spots and score a position on the nation’s roster for Tokyo.
However, the road to Tokyo isn’t entirely clear for Mura, as the 24-year-old reportedly tested positive for coronavirus recently.
According to his squad of MIKI House, Mura had a slight fever after practice on April 29th, with the athlete having a feeling of malaise. With no improvement on day 2, Mura consulted a doctor and received his positive coronavirus result.
Per NHK, Mura’s fever finally went down after about 3 days, while the swimmer is still receiving medical treatment at home and is described as now being in good physical condition, although he has been out of the pool during this time. Although there are no reported cases stemming from Mura, MIKI House has instructed athletes on the squad to observe their health for the next couple of weeks.
It’s not known when Mura will return to the pool at this point.
