In the last competitive event of the 2014 BHP Billiton Aquatic Super Series, Australia completed a clean sweep of the weekend’s titles. They won the water polo event, they won the swim meet, and now Jared Poort has won the SwimTheSwan Open Water 10km race. The one race they didn’t win was the women’s 10km event, which went to American Ashley Twichell.
The SwimTheSwan event included a 10km race, a 5km race, a 2.5km race, a 1.25km race, and a 500m race in Perth’s Swan River.
This race had some significance, at it was considered a part of the qualifying for Australia’s Pan Pac open water squad.
In the men’s elite race, the $17,000 first prize went to Jared Poort, a 19-year old who finished 5th in the 5km race in Barcelona.
He won the race with relatively easy, with a 7-second margin over Rhys Mainstone and an 18-second margin over South African Troy Prinsloo.
The women’s race went to American swimmer Ashley Twichell in 2:03.51, as she blew away the competition by nearly 30 seconds. Her fellow American Haley Anderson was 2nd in 2:04.17, and 15-year old Australian Chelsea Gubecka defended her Australian title in 2:04:18.
The winners of each 10km race received a $17,000 prize.
Well done son
