Jarod Arroyo, HS Class of 2019, Verbally Commits to Neighboring ASU

Jarod Arroyo, currently a junior in high school, has announced his verbal pledge to Arizona State University for the fall of 2019. Arroyo wrote on his Instagram account:

“I’m excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at Arizona State University!! Thanks to coach bowman and all my family and friends who helped me get here. Can’t wait to be a Sun devil!! #Forkem #ASU”

Arroyo lives in Tempe, Arizona and trains at Pitchfork Aquatics. He represented Puerto Rico at both FINA Short Course World Championships in Windsor, Canada last December, and at FINA World Junior Championships in Indianapolis this pas August. Arroyo is a 400 IMer who does it all. In Windsor he competed in the 400 free, 100/200 back, 100 fly, and 100/200/400 IM. His lineup at Indy included 200/400 free, 100/200 breast, 200 fly, and 200/400 IM. His highest finish was in the 400 IM where he was 21st out of heats. In addition he finished 23rd in the 200 IM and 24th in the 200 fly. His best times in those, however, came earlier in the summer. At Speedo Junior Nationals he placed third in the 400 IM and 13th in the 200 fly, earning PBs in both events. He also went a best time in the 400 free with his 15th-place finish.

Top SCY times:

  • 400 IM – 3:54.24
  • 200 IM – 1:51.12

  • 200 breast – 2:03.47
  • 200 fly – 1:49.85

I believe the picture should show the construction of the new baby pool. It seems to be attracting quite a bit of attention!

Does Bob make all of the recruits take pictures with him? ASU is the only school I’ve seen where recruits routinely post pictures with Bowman when they announce there commitment. There’s nothing wrong with it–it’s just a bit odd.

DMSWIM, no Bob doesn’t make all the recruits take pictures with him! Yes, your statement is odd and absurdly presumptuous. Could be that these kids are the ones who are so honored to take pictures with Bob Bowman because he is a legendary coach, and perhaps, their future swim coach?

My daughter for instance, who did her recruiting trip at ASU, didn’t get a single picture with Bob because she was shy; and felt that everyone wanted to get pictures with Bob Bowman. I have watched a meet, and observed that even swimmers and parents from the other teams would come up to him to take pictures…and Bob would stop, talk to them, pose and smile for a picture with… Read more »

I have absolutely nothing against ASU or Bob Bowman. I’ve met him before (my sister swam for him) and he seems like a nice enough guy. ASU just seems to be the only school where the swimmers take pictures with the coach. While he is a legendary coach, many other schools has well known and respected coaches too and their recruits don’t post pictures with the coaches. Your reaction to my innocuous observation is over the top. There was no hate at all in this message.

Bob Bowman is very involved in his recruiting! He is there on the field to watch the games with his recruits. They take pictures with him. Besides, the swimmers and their families are the ones posting these photos, and NOT the school. And so what…right?! Can’t deny #TheBowmanEffect. Keep ’em coming ASU!!! ☀️?

UofA continues their downward spiral

The University of Arizona will be struggling to compete in any way with ASU. Better coaches, better facilities. Overall a better program.
UofA did a disservice to themselves when the appointed Augie the new head coach.
Good luck to ASU and all its athletes.

What HS does he swim for in Arizona? The resume is impressive and nothing against swimming for another country but it is clear those times would not get him on the USA Jr Team so the resume becomes less impressive. Interesting stuff going on at ASU. They seem to be grabbing some kids early. Wonder what is in the Kool-Aide they are drinking.

By the way his best times are LC and the roster for 400 IM goes from 4:17 to 4:23 for Jr national team. He has a 4:20 ….
https://staging.swimswam.com/usa-swimming-names-65-swimmers-national-junior-team. Perhaps they see his potential when others don’t. Better be informed before talking….

Thank you for the correction and heads up. I had no clue NCAA was moving to LC.

Um, you were the one that just said “it is clear those times would not get him on the USA Jr. Team”. . .

He represented Puerto Rico internationally, so he is ineligible for the USA National Junior Team

why is asu rushing so many commits, they had a ton of commitments well before september too… wonder what is appealing to so many of them besides obviously being coached by Bowman…

Times are changing and coaches are starting to follow the path of other sports (ie. Basketball and Football). Remember a verbal commitment is only verbal. You see decommitments all the time in the other sports and have already seen it with a few already in swimming.

What would you do, as a coach, if other top programs in the country are recruiting/getting commitments of top kids? You either get ahead of them or stay behind…

For better or worse, it’s happening!

I heard that Bowman was giving super good offers and only making them last for about a week. People are probably only allowed to take up the offer he gives or totally drop ASU as a choice all together.
