Jersey Flyers Aquatic Club 18-year-old Jason Arthur headed the short course yards Ithaca Sectional over the weekend, winning 5 individual events.
Arthur, who will be a big part of the Drexel Dragon freshman class next fall, dominated in a wide range of events. On Friday, he took the 400 IM (3:53.68). Saturday, he won the 200 fly (1:50.26) and 100 back (49.04) in a tough double. And he saved the toughest test for Sunday night, pairing the 200 back (1:45.64) and 200 IM (1:48.47) and winning both.
On the girls side, 14-year-old Katherine Douglass nearly matched Arthur’s total, winning 4 events in all. The Westchester swimmer hit a new lifetime-best of 22.48 in winning the 50 free on Friday, and piled up three more wins later on: the 200 breast (2:12.93), 100 free (50.37) and 200 IM (2:02.81).
In team points, it was the boys of the Eastern Express Swim Team and the Nation’s Capital girls who took home trophies. Eastern Express got a trio of wins from 17-year-old Jack McIntyre in the distance races. McIntyre was 15:34.10 to win the 1650 free to open the meet, then returned to go 4:30.56 and win the 500 free. He also won the 1000 free late in the meet in 9:22.73.
Nation’s Capital edged 757 Swim for the title on the girls side. NCAP had a deep team effort, but Maddie Heilbrun, Caroline Rhodes and Erin Quinn led the way in points.
The 15-year-old Heilbrun was 2nd in the 400 IM and also made the top 8 in the 200 IM and 200 back while swimming all 5 relays. 16-year-old Rhodes was a top 8 finisher in the 1000 free, 500 free and 400 IM, and the 14-year-old Quinn was top 8 in the 1000 and 200, plus swam three of the team’s relay events.
