On the second day of the World University Games, Great Britain’s Jay Lelliott was positioned in the middle of the pool as the top seed in the men’s 800 freestyle. During the race, he dropped nearly five seconds to break the National Record and earn the silver medal in the event.
Lelliott took it out strong, leading at the 100 and 200 marks. Sergi Frolov of Ukraine stayed close to Leliott, briefly taking the lead at the 600m mark. Leliott battled back with some long, effective underwaters you don’t often see in distance races. Nonetheless, Frolov finally overhauled Leliott and pulled away for the win. After finishing second in the same event at the 2011 World University Games, Frolov finished first, earning the gold medal, with his time of 7:50.28.
Lelliott finished second, just behind Frolov, for the silver medal. His time of 7:50.97 will stand as the new English record in the event. He broke the previous English national record of 7.51:60 that was set by Dan Fogg. Even though he did break the English Record, he is still several seconds off of the British record in the event. David Davies currently holds the British Record with his time of 7:44.32 from 2009.
