The 2023 Puerto Rico International Swimming Open concluded from San Juan over the weekend with 21-year-old Jayhan Odlum-Smith producing a new St. Lucian national record.

Competing in the heats of the men’s 50m fly, Odlum-Smith scored the top-seeded time of 24.40. That sliced .15 off his own previous personal best and national record of 25.55 logged in April of 2021.

Odlum-Smith was a hair slower in the final but still wound up with the gold in an effort of 24.45.

Kristen Romano of Puerto Rico got it done for gold on multiple fronts, including in the 100m fly. The 23-year-old former Ohio State Buckeye clinched the victory in a time of 1:00.61, beating the field by over a second.

Jarod Arroyo, formerly of Arizona State University, topped the men’s 400m IM event in a time of 4:24.86. That was after he settled for silver in the 200m breast, claiming runner-up status in that event in a time of 2:17.51.

Taking the men’s 200m breast was 16-year-old Xavier Ruiz. Ruiz scored the win in a time of 2:16.22, a result which fell just .06 shy of the Puerto Rican national record.
