Jeff Poppell Explains Move to Head Coach at South Carolina

In the SwimSwam Podcast dive deeper into the sport you love with insider conversations about swimming. Hosted by Coleman HodgesGarrett McCaffrey, and Gold Medal Mel Stewart, SwimSwam welcomes both the biggest names in swimming that you already know, and rising stars that you need to get to know, as we break down the past, present, and future of aquatic sports.

We sat down with Jeff Poppell, the recently announced new head coach of the University of South Carolina. Poppell explains why he chose to leave his post at Florida, where he’d been having success over the last 3 seasons as head coach of the women’s team. Poppell wanted to stay in the SEC, but the opportunity to coach men and women was enticing and he wasn’t worried about making a “lateral move” in terms of his career.

Great interview. Jeff has a vision and has been successful everywhere he’s been. I look forward to watching him and S Carolina climb up the SEC ladder. Best of luck to Jeff, his family, and to the S Carolina swimming community.

Jeff Popell, more like Jeff Popcorn! LOL! (Disclaimer: I was actually offered the USC job but declined because the age groupers I’m working with show so much promise)

He’s got his work cut out for him but he’s definitely the person for the job. Wishing him the best of luck and excited to see a new team come up in the rankings over the next few years!

Good interview! I hope the assistants he hire are well paid also and have a similar bonus structure! Easiest way to “climb” is to recruit Internationals!
