Jenny Mensing Out of World Championships for Germany

The German Swimming Federation announced on Wednesday that 27-year old Jenny Mensing of the Wiesbaden 1911 Swim Club has pulled out of this summer’s World Championships.

According to the federation, “health reasons” have kept Mensing from training regularly since the German Championships at the end of April, and her coach Oliver Grossman said that “the decision was taken after extensive discussions with herself and our team of experts.”

Mensing was scheduled to likely swim the 100 and 200 backstroke in Barcelona, as well as lead off Germany’s medley relay, after winning the shorter 100 and placing 2nd in the 200 at the German National Championships.

Her times this year haven’t been great (she was only 1:01.50 and 2:11.36 respectively), but she is coming off of a banner season in 2012. Despite failing to final in either backstroke at the Olympics, she won the European long course title in the 100 and took silver in the 200, broke a minute for the first time in her career in the 100 (59.85), and cut half-a-second off of her career best in the 200 as well (2:08.30.)
