Jim Henry Out at Texas

Update: Roric Fink has been hired as the new assistant at Texas.

This will not be news to many insiders in the swimming community, but after weeks of rumors, Texas made it official over the weekend that they were seeking a possible replacement for Jim Henry as the assistant women’s coach for the Longhorns with this job listing.

Henry, a 1990 Texas graduate, was on deck in Austin for 7 seasons, including the last two under the title of “Associate Head Coach”. Prior to joining the Longhorn staff, he had an extremely successful run at the University of Denver and built them into one of the country’s mid-major powers. The two-time Sun Belt Conference Head coach of the Year worked predominantly with the distance group in Austin.

Henry was a very popular coach in his time with Austin, and former swimmers have indicated that he was very much a stabilizing force in the tumultuous tenure of Kim Brackin. But new head coach Carol Capitani, as so often happens, has every right to bring in her own assistant that best meshes with her program. This should allow her to develop a fresh start for her reign over the program.

Capitani has not ruled out, at least publicly, bringing Henry back after interviewing other candidates, but as of now they are seeking other options.

Is this how UT treats its own? Jim Henry is a true Orangeblood, and now he has to interview for his position again? Why wasnt he given the Head Coaching Job?

It’d be a shame to see Jim and his deep Longhorn connection leave the team … of course, maybe there’s a pathway out there for him to deepen his men’s team experience so that he returns at some point to Austin on the other side of the deck?

I wish Jim Henry would apply for an assistant’s position at Alabama. Dennis needs successful, experienced assistants who must hit the ground running for recruits as he is in England until August. The list of current recruits for 2012-13 at Alabama appears very weak on paper,
I am hoping that some blue chip swimmers will be permitted to transfer to Alabama.

he isn’t necessarily “out”… especially since he is still coaching the Texas women right now. he just has to go through the interview process again, and he is certainly still an option for Capitani.

Carol Capitani is still considering Jim Henry as an assistant but exploring other options. So, No Jim Henry is technically not out
