Reports To:  Associate Executive Director                             Classification:  FT, Exempt

 

General Function:

Under the general direction of the Associate Executive Director and consistent with the Christian mission, policies and procedures set forth by the YMCA of Catawba Valley, the Competitive Swimming Director will deliver a high quality swim team program that promotes achievement, creates a sense of belonging and fosters positive relationships. The Competitive Swimming Director will provide programmatic and staff leadership, swim coaching expertise and volunteer activation while ensuring the safety of all participants. As a YMCA professional, the Competitive Swimming Director is a fully engaged staff team member whose priority is to serve the members of the YMCA. They will work collaboratively with other professional staff to provide an excellent YMCA experience for all members.

 

Minimum Standards/Required Certifications:

  1. Preferred four-year degree from an accredited college and experience in aquatics and competitive swimming.
  2. Minimum of 3 years YMCA Swim Coaching experience required.
  3. Must have strong leadership, interpersonal skills and supervisory experience.
  4. Strong understanding of fiscal management and the budget process.
  5. Current certifications in BLS/Professional Rescuer CPR, First Aid, Athlete Protection Training and ASCA level 4 or higher preferred. YMCA Swim Coach certification and registration required within 30 days of hire. Certified Pool Operator certification preferred.
  6. Must be attentive to details, well organized, able to meet deadlines, take initiative to solve problems, be proactive in decision-making, and work with minimal to moderate supervision.
  7. Strong background in swim team and aquatic programming.
  8. Knowledge of emergency policies and procedures for the facility.
  9. Understanding of risk management issues and safety requirements for the facility.
  10. Must have strong oral and written communication skills with volunteers, members, and parents.
  11. Must be willing to fulfill all swim team responsibilities to the best of the employee’s ability.
  12. Must be able to take direction and work cooperatively with supervisor and other staff.

 

Responsibilities:

  1. Work directly with the Associate Executive Director and COO to plan and program the Competitive Swim Team program for the YMCA of Catawba Valley.
  2. Manage all aspects of the YSST Program including staff, schedule, curriculum, budget, and meet entry.
  3. Market the annual home meet schedule to provide the necessary revenue, while offering excellent competitive opportunities to the YSST program.
  4. Responsible for managing programming, safety, and operations at all YMCA hosted swim meets.
  5. Develop training and competitive plans and goals to provide an opportunity for all YSST swimmers to reach their full potential in the sport.
  6. Work with High School Junior and Senior swimmers in their pursuit of collegiate swimming including, contacting and meeting with college coaches to negotiate scholarship and roster opportunities.
  7. Provide guidance in development of annual registration documents.
  8. Responsible for growth within competitive swimming programs at all YMCA of Catawba Valley locations.
  9. Provide consistent parent/swimmer communication through appropriate channels.
  10. Ensure collection and management of all program and meet fees.
  11. Assist in all aspects of meet management including entries, setup, and breakdown.
  12. Provide a safe and supportive environment for all swim team participants, including strict adherence to aquatic safety plan and Safe Sport requirements.
  13. Provide support to all swim team staff members and volunteers.
  14. Oversee YMCA of Catawba Valley recreational swimming programs and Masters Swimming programs.
  15. Lead all staff meetings and training opportunities as deemed necessary.
  16. Document daily attendance and training plans.
  17. Roster and retention planning for all age group training groups at both branches.
  18. Plan annual recruiting drive with local summer league teams including swimming clinics and meet visits.
  19. Plan and provide opportunities for placement/tryout swims for new swimmers throughout the year.
  20. Alongside the Aquatics Directors, responsible for coordinating YMCA pool use of High School Swim teams and serving as Meet Director for YMCA-hosted high school swim meets.
  21. Ability to work flexible hours including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
  22. Ability to travel to meets or find appropriate coaching coverage for swimmers as approved by supervisor.
  23. Assumes Manager on Duty (MOD) responsibilities as scheduled.
  24. Responsible for achieving assigned annual fundraising goal in support of the YMCA’s Annual Giving Campaign.
  25. Any other duties assigned by the Associate Executive Director.
