Team New York Aquatics (TNYA) is looking for energetic, experienced coaches to lead adult swim practices at locations in Columbus Circle, Tribeca, Crown Heights, and the South Bronx.
Coaches are paid hourly and will be scheduled to coach one practice a week, with time and location to be mutually agreed between coach and TNYA. Our workouts are usually held at 6.30am to 8am weekdays or 7pm to 8.30pm weeknights; our current practice schedule can be found at www.tnya.org/schedule.
Candidates are encouraged to apply at any time; appointments will be made on a rolling basis throughout the next 12 months as needed.
Open Coaching Roles
Rainbow Swim (Proficient Swimmers)
A general masters workout for experienced swimmers of varying skill levels (min: 100 yds under 2 minutes).
- Pay: $30/hr ($45 per 90-min practice) + 1 free workout per practice coached
- Ideal For: Coaches who can manage large lanes, give stroke feedback, and bring the good vibes.
LPZ / Technique Development (Beginner-Intermediate Swimmers)
Hybrid practice for adults gaining confidence or refining technique; lower coach:swimmer ratio and more instruction expected vs rainbow swim.
- Pay: $40/hr ($60 per 90-min practice) + 1 free workout per practice coached
- Ideal For: Coaches who can teach drills, manage mixed-ability groups, and plan multi-week progressions.
Adult Learn to Swim (ALTS)
Teaches true beginners how to swim in a small-group setting (1:3 ratio).
- Pay: $40/hr ($30 per 45-min class, $60 total per session)
- Ideal For: Patient, empathetic instructors who love celebrating small wins.
What We’re Looking For
- All positions: 1–2+ years of swim coaching experience; masters swim coaching experience and/or competitive swim experience an advantage, but not essential.
- For ALTS, LPZ, or TD: at least 1 year of experience teaching persons with no swimming experience how to swim or USMS Adult Learn to Swim instructor certification (active or lapsed)
- Currently reside within or soon will reside within commuting distance to Manhattan, Brooklyn, or the Bronx and intend to reside here long-term (at least one full year); this is not a summer-only position.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to create a welcoming environment for all
- Comfort teaching adults of varying backgrounds and abilities
