Jorge Iga Breaks Mexican Record in the 100 Free for the 2nd Time This Month (Westmont)

2023 PRO SWIM SERIES – WESTMONT

Mexican swimmer Jorge Iga swam 48.79 in prelims of the men’s 100 free on Saturday morning at the Pro Swim Series stop in Westmont, Illinois.

Not only did that give him the top seed headed toward the final, it broke his own Mexican Record in the event.

Iga’s old record of 48.87 was swum at last week’s Mexican Qualification Meet for the World Championships, among other meets. Prior to this month, the Mexican Record was Iga’s 49.07 set in 2018.

The “A” standard for the World Aquatics Championships this summer is 48.51.

Iga has been training in the postgrad group under Sergio Lopez at Virginia Tech since September 2022.

“I changed my commitment to the sport,” Iga said. “I started a rigorous diet. Lost about 20 lbs from the last world championships to date. Worked with a psychologist. And the reason of my move was to fight the comfortable spot where I was. I put myself into new challenges such as a new team, nutrition, new coach…to seek improvement.”

Iga also broke the Mexican Record in the 50 fly (23.99), and the 200 free (1:46.43) at the Mexican Trials meet. He was a touch slower (1:47.29 in prelims, 1:47.60 in finals) in the 200 free this week in Westmont, but still finished in 2nd place.
