Bolles’ Joseph Schooling is off to a fast start in prelims of the 2013, breaking the National Independent High School Records in the 100 yard fly at the Florida 1A High School State Championship prelims.
Schooling swam a 45.90 in his lone individual event. That breaks the 46.20 that he himself swam on September 28th at the mid-season FSPA Invite as the best ever among Independent (aka, private and prep schools) High School swimmers.
The overall record is just a hair faster: his club teammate Caeleb Dressel, at the same mid-season meet, was a 45.89.
Schooling will have one more shot at breaking that record in finals before Dressel, who swims for Clay High School in Florida’s 2A (slightly bigger schools), goes on Saturday.
For a reference on just how staggering that time is for a high school swimmer (Schooling will head to Texas in the fall), it would have placed 5th at the NCAA Championships last year. The 100 fly is a race at that meet often dominated by upperclassmen: there were no college freshman in the top 16 at last year’s meet, and only a single college sophomore.
And to think, in February of 2012, just a few weeks before the official SwimSwam launch, we were stunned when Maclin Davis went a 46.64 to whack half-a-second off of the old mark.

I don’t know if Joseph Schooling is fully tapered because I have read the Southeast Asian Games in December were his biggest meet of the year. But if he is, I’m sure he can swim a 45 low.

bobo – I think his focus on the SE Asian Games have been overblown. For one, Bolles has had no problem getting guys to swim fast at multiple meets in a short period. For 2, not sure Schooling needs to be at his absolute peak to win several golds at the SE Asian Games.
Yeah, except it is a way bigger meet than Florida state 1a, and he clearly doesn’t need to be fully tapered to win at this meet, so your number 2 doesn’t really make any sense
Totally agree. Swim fast for your school, or swim fast for your country. It is obvious which meet he should be focusing on. The Southeast Asian Games is a very important competition, because swimming is one of Singapore’s gold-generating sport at this regional games. Schooling cannot afford to take any chances, because he has a lot riding on this. Besides, just because Schooling is fast, doesn’t mean he doesn’t face competition. Just a reminder, he “only” placed 3rd in the 100 fly at this meet in 2011.
