Jude Williams, Tony Moore Hit OT Cuts on Day 3 at Santa Clarita Sectionals

Riverside Aquatics Association’s Jude Williams, a verbal commit to the University of Wisconsin for 2020-21, and UC Santa Barbara’s Tony Moore both earned 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials cuts on Saturday night at Santa Clarita Sectionals, winning the 400 free and 100 breast, respectively. University of Iowa senior Michael Tenney came within .03 of the Trials standard in the 100 fly with his second-place finish.

Williams dropped .79 from his entry time to win the 400 free in 3:57.04 ahead of UC Santa Barbara’s Joseph Lastelic (3:57.79). Lastelic dropped 1.41 and came within half a second of the OT cut of 3:57.29. Moore went 1:03.25, taking .71 off his seed time, to win the 100 breast and punch his ticket to Omaha with a margin of .04. It was a tight race for second place with UC San Diego’s Edgar Chin (1:04.52) edging Matthew Wilcox of Walnut Creek Aquabears (1:04.79), Marcello Quarante of UC Santa Barbara (1:04.94) and Corban McIntosh of Marin Pirates (1:04.98). Tenney was runner-up to Spencer Dailey of UC San Diego and Orinda Aquatics (53.91) in the 100 fly. Dailey was already a Trials qualifier in the event but improved his time by .06. The 2020 Trials standard is 54.19.

Other event winners:

  • 16-year-old Matthew Driscoll of Orinda Aquatics dropped 4.87 seconds to win the 200 back in 2:05.02 ahead of UC San Diego’s Tyler James (2:05.19) and Roadrunner Aquatics’ Robert Moseley (2:05.86).
  • Stanford-bound Alexandra Crisera of Beach Cities won the 200 back with 2:15.86, 3.1 seconds ahead of Crow Canyon and UCLA’s Abriana Howard (2:18.95).
  • UC Santa Barbara’s Emily Boggess went 4:22.16 to win the 400 free ahead of Princeton junior Courtney Tseng of La Mirada Armada (4:23.81), who dropped 5.43 seconds off her entry time.
  • BREA Aquatics’ Kenisha Liu, who will be a senior at UCLA in the fall, won her fourth event with a 1:00.58 in the 100 fly. That was a best time by .10 and takes her .11 under the 2020 Trials standard.
  • 16-year-old Gabrielle Wei of NOVA Aquatics went .77 faster than her seed time to win the 100 breast in 1:12.59.
  • La Mirada won the women’s 4×200 free relay with splits from Courtney Tseng (2:05.62), Cathryn Salladin (2:08.32), Catherine Sanchez (2:05.87), and Taylor Ault (2:02.72). They combined for 8:22.52, an 8.62-second drop from their seed time, and won by 9 seconds over BREA Aquatics.
  • BREA Aquatics won the men’s 800 free relay by 4.5 seconds with 7:47.49, improving their entry time by 5.44 seconds. 200 free winner Michael Tenney (1:53.08), Vincent Cheng (1:57.70), Preston Planells (1:59.94), and Nathan Chow (1:56.77) contributed to the win.
