Indian River stand-out Alec Scott will be transferring to the University of Alabama after a phenomenal sophomore season. At the NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, Scott swept both IM events, posting times of 1:48.41 in the 20o IM and 3:56.27 in the 400 IM. His final individual event resulted in a second place finish in the 200 backstroke with a 1:49.05. He was also the second leg of the winning 800 freestyle relay at the NJCAA Championships, splitting a 1:39.20.
Alec Scott’s father swam for Alabama while he was in school, so it was always a dream of Alec’s to follow in his fathers footsteps. At the end of his high school career, Scott was frustrated with the sport and was contemplating quitting. His dad persuaded him to take a year off to see what could happen. He trained with his club team for the next year, but still did not reach the division 1 caliber he was shooting for. When he looked into Indian River, coach Ryan Mallam decided to give him a chance. Scott came into his element while swimming at Indian River, elevating himself to the caliber he was shooting for.
“My dad swam for Alabama so its kinda always been my dream and for a long time I thought I would never make it there. I guess what I learned from being a bit of a journeyman is to never give up on yourself because you never know what you might be capable of.”
Scott will be able to contribute right away. Szymmy Day and Anton McKee were the top two 200 IMer’s this season at 1:51’s. In the 400 IM he is just behind Ian Decker (3:47.9) and Travis Kerner (3:53.5) and should be able to benefit from training with a much deeper IM group.
I also swam at Indian River then transferred to Alabama! Love your choices Alec! Good luck & Swim Fast and Roll Tide!
