High school junior Drayden Bell lit up the pool in Wichita, Kansas with a best time in the 50 free of 20.10.

For the Wichita Swim Club product, that time makes him the fastest 50 freestyler in the high school class of 2022. The previous fastest 50 free time in the class of ‘22 was a 20.17, swum by Dawson Joyce.

This swim earns Bell a spot in the top 30 all-time fastest 50 free times among 15-16 year-olds at #29. Bell, the defending Kansas 6A State Champion in the 50 and 100 free, is also competing in stroke and mid-distance events at the Air Cap Circuit meet:

  • 100 fly – 51.09
  • 100 free – 45.30
  • 100 back – 53.42
  • 200 free

His victories in both the 100 fly and 100 free were also best times, as he dropped an entire second in the 100 fly and .10 seconds in the 100 free. His previous best 100 free time was only from July of this year, while his 100 fly time was from December, 2019. Bell also placed 1st in the 100 back, adding .57 seconds to his best time from Sectionals in March of 2019.

Other Notable Swims:

  • Ian Blake won the 100 breast in a best time of 59.19. His previous best, from pre-coronavirus quarantine in February, was just under the 1 minute mark (59.93). 15-year-old Adam Sandid placed 2nd closing in on the 1:00 mark at 1:00.45.
  • Sandid later snagged 1st place in  the 200IM by dropping 3 seconds (2:00.07).
  • Madeleine Heckman won the 50 free, touching the wall with a best time of 24.14  and outtouching Future’s qualifier Ariana Dirkzwager who also swam a best time (24.17).
  • Dirkzwager then won the 100 free and dropped .30 seconds for another best time of 52.65.
  • Defending SCIAC 200 and 500 free champion Ella Blake won the 500 free in a time of 5:09.00, about 8 seconds off of her best time from the SCIAC Championships in February.
  • 15-year-old Lolly Hindman won the 100 fly in 58.27, staying close to her best time with a .38 second add.
  • In the boy’s 500 free, 16-year-old Chase Dwornicki took 1st place with his first sub-5 minute 500 swim (4:56.33).

The Dolphin kick should not be allow ever in a freestyle event. However, because it is allowed , the times are always going to be faster then they should be.
