Junior Open Water Worlds Team Swimmer Erin Emery Verbally Commits to Minnesota

Erin Emery, a member of the United States’ team for the 2014 Junior Open Water World Championships in Hungary, has verbally committed to the Minnesota Golden Gophers. At that meet, she placed 19th in the Junior Girls’ 7.5km race.

She couples her skill in the open water, not surprisingly, with distance freestyle races in the pool. In yards, here bests are:

  • 200 free – 1:49.50
  • 500 free – 4:46.07
  • 1000 free – 9:45.46
  • 1650 free – 16:11.96

Those times all came in the 2012-2013 season, though this doesn’t mean she wasn’t improving in 2014 still. Her long course bests in the 100-800 freestyles are all from the summer of 2014. That includes a 2:03.7 in the 200 free, 4:13.1 in the 400 free, and 8:41.4 in the 800 free.

Since Ashley Steenvoorden won a USA Swimming National Championship, Minnesota’s distance freestyle succes has exploded. That includes All-Americans Kiera Janzen and Sam Harding last year, and probable future All-Americans Breanne Siwicki and Brooke Lorentzen, among others.

She swims for the Sandpipers of Nevada and Palo Verde High School. She placed 2nd at the Nevada High School State Championship meets in the 200 and 500 freestyles last season.
