Junior Worlds Silver Medalist Minna Abraham of Hungary Commits to USC

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Minna Abraham from Budapest, Hungary, has announced her commitment to the University of Southern California for 2023-24.

“I am beyond grateful and honored to announce my written commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at The University of Southern California!! I would like to take this opportunity to thank my parents, coaches, teachers, teammates and friends for supporting and helping me through this journey! #fighton✌️”

Abraham, who swims for the club team Újpesti Torna Egylet, will be the second Hungarian member of the USC class of 2027; her teammate Reka Nyiradi verbally committed last spring. “Best of the Rest” recruit Macky Hodges and Turkey national teamer Merve Tuncel will also join the Trojans next fall.

Abraham specializes in IM and mid-distance freestyle. She was a silver medalist in the 200 free (1:58.23), 200 IM (2:13.45), and 400 IM (4:44.19) at the 8th FINA World Junior Championships in Lima, Peru. She earned PBs in all three events, as well as the 100 free (55.59) leading off the women’s 400 free relay, for which Hungary took home the gold.

When she arrives in Los Angeles, Abraham will fill the hole left by Isabelle Odgers’ graduation at the end of this season. Last year, Odgers and Calypso Sheridan (a fifth-year) formed the nucleus of the Trojans’ IM group with 1:55s in the 200 and 4:08/4:07 in their respective 400s. This year, first-years Justina Kozan, Ashley McMillan, and Ella Flowers have put up solid early-season performances in the IMs.

USC placed third at the 2022 Pac-12 Championships, just 27 points behind Cal. Abraham’s converted times would have scored in the A finals of the 200 IM, 400 IM, and 200 free, as well as the B final of the 500 free, at the conference meet. At 2022 NCAA Championships, she would have scored in the B final of the 200 free and would have earned an automatic bid in the 400 IM, as well.

Best LCM times:

  • 200 IM – 2:13.45 (1:57.34)
  • 400 IM – 4:44.19 (4:10.26)
  • 200 free – 1:58.23 (1:43.63)
  • 400 free – 4:16.34 (4:47.21)
  • 800 free – 8:52.25 (9:56.35)

Nice pickjup for the Trojans and hopefully re-establishing the Hungarian pipeline of talent. Even though Coach Lea’s home cooking couldn’t keep son, Rex, at home in LA, the USC swim program looks to be stabilized and can add quality recruits to match the level of recent additions in Abraham and Kozan. Trojan diving excellent, now need both quality and quantity on the Men’s and Women’s swim roster. I suspect Lea will be looking to the Transfer Portal for a new infusion of talent.
