Kansas Sweeps Double-Dual With South Dakota, Lindenwood

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas women’s swimming and diving team concluded the last of its three-meet home stretch at Robinson Natatorium on Saturday, winning seven of nine events and sweeping the Double Dual against Lindenwood and South Dakota. In the two-day event, Kansas won 15 of 19 total events on its way to an unbeaten weekend.

Day two action kicked off with a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay as Claudia Dougan, Caroline Blake, Keyla Brown and Lauren Collins of Team A swam a time of 1:35.56.

Hailey Farrell picked up right where she left off from day one, winning the 400-yard IM in a time of 4:30.46. Blake also picked up an individual win, posting a time of 52.98 in the 100-yard freestyle for her first of the weekend. After teaming up and winning the 200-yard medley relay yesterday, Lezli Sisung and Lydia Lafferty each grabbed solo victories. Sisung took the 200-yard backstroke (2:05.79) and Lafferty won the 100-yard butterfly (56.16). Gracyn O’Mara continues to claim individual wins after finishing first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:07.05.

Jayhawk divers resumed on the one-meter board as they swept the top four spots. Shiyun Lai won the event with 297.40 points after placing second on Friday in the three-meter dive. Trailing her was Lize van Leeuwen, who scored 282.75 points, qualifying her for an NCAA zone cut diving spot in the one-meter event. Van Leeuwen joins Lai and Gabriela San Juan Carmona in qualifying for both the one-meter and three-meter NCAA zone cut diving spots.

“I thought we came out today and swam to our standard. I was really happy with Hailey Farrell, Gracyn O’Mara, Lezli Sisung and Aidan Howze this weekend. All in all, really happy with how we finished. We look forward to seeing our alumni next weekend and keeping the motor going towards midseason.”

LAWRENCE, Kansas – South Dakota swimming and diving came away with eight victories and 32 top three finishes during a two-day double dual against Kansas and Summit League member Lindenwood inside the Robinson Natatorium on the Kansas campus.

The Coyote women won four events, two individual and two relays while the men’s team produced three individual wins and one relay victory.

Joaquin Contreras-Fallico, a freshman, produced a season-best time of 1:50.81 in winning the 200 back while moving up one spot to fourth on the school’s all-time chart in the process.

Matthew Sorbe, a sophomore, won the 500 free while Jack Berdahl, a junior, claimed the 200 breast and the South Dakota men claimed the 400 free relay to close the meet behind the foursome of Aidan Gantenbein, Contreras-Fallico, Mack Sathre and Zachary Kopp.

Sorbe, the school record holder in the 500 free, touched the wall in 5:09.05 while Berdahl, the school record holder in the 200 breast, was clocked in 2:06.98.

Contreras-Fallico (100 back), Sorbe (1000 free) and Berdahl (100 breast) all posted runner-up performances as well along with Gantenbein (200 back), Sathre (400 IM) and Kopp twice (100 free, 50 free).

South Dakota men posted runner-up finishes in the 800 free relay, 200 free relay and 200 medley relay.

Contreras-Fallico, Berdahl, Sathre and Kopp swam in the 200 medley relay in 1:31.79 while Gantenbein, Jacob Carlson, Sathre and Kopp competed in the 200 free relay. The quartet of Sorbe, Parker SonnabendTanner Reed and Carlson made up the 800 free relay unit.

Emily Kahn and Taylor Buhr came away with individual victories to pace the Coyote women’s team, who also claimed the 800 free relay and 400 free relay.

Kahn touched the wall first in the 50 free in 24.07 while Buhr won the 200 breast in 2:21.61.

The foursome of Gabbie AhrendtSkyler LeverenzTatum O’Shea and Kahn won the 400 free relay in 3:29.66 while the quartet of Ahrendt, O’Shea, Leverenz and Taylor Horan claimed the 800 free relay in 7:40.40.

Kahn was the runner-up in the 100 free, Ahrendt finished second in the 200 free and Camilla Brogger-Andersen placed second in the 1000 free. Kahn, Leverenz, Sara Mayer and Ahrendt finished second in the 200 free relay.

Third-place finishes came from O’Shea (200 free), Buhr (100 breast), Brogger-Andersen (500 free) and Mayer twice (200 fly, 100 fly) on the women’s side. Sonnabend (200 free, 200 breast) and Carlson (100 fly, 100 free) recorded third place efforts for the South Dakota men.

The Coyote women’s team will host Iowa State in its lone home dual of the fall semester on Friday at 5 p.m. inside the DakotaDome Pool.

It was a phenomenal effort by the Lindenwood University swimming and diving teams on day two of the University of Kansas meet.

Assistant Coach Canaan Campbell stated, “I liked the energy the team came out with on day two. We were down a few guys and had to shuffle some event around and was proud of how the team handled that. The women’s team raced well against two strong opponents and are on a good trajectory for where we want to be for the championship season.”

The Lindenwood women’s team of Stephanie MarksKornelia BuszkaJoselle Mensah and Maja Piotrowicz grabbed third in the 200-yard freestyle relay. On the men’s side, Lindenwood’s Lance GodardOndrej DusaTrevor Danner and Piotr Kowalczyk finished in first with a time of 1:23.72. Jose OchoaNick Williams and Adam Szczerba finished in first, second and third respectively with times of 4:10.23, 4:12.52, and 4:14.19 in the 400-yard IM.

Dusa took first place in the men’s 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45.96. In the women’s 200-yard backstroke, Stephanie Marks finished in third with a time of 2:06.25. On the men’s side, Jacob Noble also recorded a third-place finish with a time of 1:58.10.

The 100-yard butterfly event showed Kowalczyk (50.49) and Godard (50.95) finished in first and second. Jaxson Bradburn and Adam Szczerba completed the men’s 500-yard freestyle with times of 5:11.10 and 5:13.38 for second and third place.

“We had a lot of progress this week from the divers. LU men placed 1,2,3 both days and we saw a solid performance on Friday from freshmen, Bennet Loving, who won one meter diving and then placed second on three meter on Saturday. We are looking forward to seeing more progress with our divers moving into our Tri meet with Mizzou and SIU on November 3,” said Cortney Teague, Assistant Coach.

Noah BoydBennet Loving and David Molina-Fregenal swept first, second third in the men’s 3-mtr diving with 261.90, 259.45 and 249.85 respectively. Mattia Giurgevich finished in second place in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:07.37. For the 400-yard freestyle relay two Lindenwood teams finished in the top three. In second with a time of 3:07.47 were Kowalczyk, Dusa, Godard and Giurgevich; while Szczerba, Max WettelandRyan Boeding and Trevor Danner recorded a time of 3:12.02 for third.

Lindenwood will be back in action on October 27th, at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Meet time is slated for 3:00 pm.
