15-year-old Kate Douglass, who swam unattached this weekend, swam her way to a big win at the Ithaca Sectionals in the 100 free. Douglass went 49.02, about a half second off of her lifetime best, to win by over a second. Olivia Tighe, who is also 15, went 50.56 to lower her PB from before this weekend by over a full second and take 2nd behind Douglass. Drew Modrov, from the Hauppauge Athletic Association, posted the win for the men with a 44.42, edging out SOLO’s Matthew Yish (44.89).
Badger’s Carly Cummings, an Auburn commit, swam a personal best 1:58.77 to win the 200 IM. Crimson’s Calvin Yang swam a 1:51.16 to win the men’s 200 IM.
In the 200 back, Quinn Scannell, also of Badger, swam a 1:57.00. That took more than a full second off of her personal best. AGUA’s Isabel Gormley finished 2nd in 1:58.53. On the men’s side, Patriot Swim Club’s Andrew Carbone earned the win with a 1:47.16, dropping about a half second off of his previous best.
For the distance events, Emily Ecker of Portland Porpoises broke through the ten-minute barrier with a 9:57.41, the only swimmer to break 10 in the 1000 free. The men’s mile went to Badger’s Andrew Babyak at 15:26.79.
I wonder what happened with Kate. She tied the NAG in the 50 and transfers from Westchester to Chelsea Piers? Maybe she just needed a change in scenery…
Same coach since she started so maybe.
22.04/48.54 at 15. It was a very successful sprint freestyle SCY season for Miss Douglass. She has tied Simone Manuel’s 15/16 NAG record in the 50 free. She must now convert that progression into long course. The shortest distance seems to be her best event for the moment, like another young US talent Anya Goeders. We’ll see how her 100 free develops in the future as she gets older and takes more power and improves her endurance. Big natural talent.
