Kate Douglass Leads Day 2 Prelims With 2:22.77 200 Breaststroke

2024 NCAP ELITE QUALIFIER

Kate Douglass posted another impressive prelims swim as she swam a 2:22.77 in the 200 breaststroke. That was her fastest prelims swim of the year.

Douglass swam a personal best time in the event earlier this year as she swam a 2:19.30 at the Pro Series stop in Knoxville in January. There she swam a 2:23.04 in prelims. Her time from today was also faster than she was in prelims and semifinals of the event at the World Championships in Doha this past February as she swam a 2:24.15 to lead prelims and a 2:23.17 for 2nd in semifinals. She went on to win silver in a 2:20.91.

Today’s swim now earns Douglass the top seven swims by an American in the event this season. Lilly King is the 2nd fastest American in the event this season as she swam a 2:23.27 at Sectionals in March.

Lilly King’s best time since her Tokyo PB is the 2:20.95 from 2023 Worlds Trials. If Alex Walsh has another drop in her come trials, King is in big trouble in this event.

King has the advantage, even if she is slightly off. She’s been doing this race for awhile at the toughest level. Alex has her work cut out for her but she has the talent to pull it off.

Lilly King posted a time of 2:24.62 in the W 200 BR at the 2024 Indy Spring Cup. If that’s the best Lilly King can do in the state of Indiana (IUPUI Natatorium) during the month of May, Lilly King is in trouble.

As usual, reading way too much into in-season times. King has not shown her cards much this year.

2:22.9 from Alex untapered? Alex is a massive taper swimmer too. Lilly King, you’ve got your work cut out for you. Alex just made it REALLY interesting.

i’m sure they’ve began cutting some yardage/dryland, at least slightly.

I suspect the swimmers have started to taper since May 19, give or take a day.

Alex’s swim should give her a tremendous amount of confidence. Insane drop and it’s pretty clear she’s working prelims vs finals pacing. Ella Nelson also had a PB! Should be an exciting race in Indy!

Seems reasonable for right now. I wonder how far into their taper they are for trials.

DANG

2:19.95 for Kate and 2:22.87 for Alex

Alex has a shot but Lilly always swims fast in Indy so

Alex is moreso a “taper swimmer” than the other uva superstars. She’s certainly not bad in season but I expect her to drop more than Kate or Gretchen in Indy. Lily is shaking

The time posted by Alex Walsh in the W 200 BR was faster than the times posted by Sydney Pickrem (2:23.79) and Kelsey Wog (2:23.80) at the 2024 Canadian Swimming Trials. A step in the right direction.

It’s time for the 27 year old Lilly King to pass the torch in the W 200 BR and primarily focus on the W 100 BR.

She’s not going to give away the torch. Someone needs to take it from her. You gotta earn it.

I agree Lilly always swims fast in Indy, but this isn’t the normal Indy. This isnt IUPUI, the pool she loves so much. This is Lucas Oil Stadium, somewhere she’s never swam, and yes, it’ll be in Indiana, but idk if there will be as much of a “home field advantage” considering all the other spectators that will be there from across the country.

Ok, a good 200 breast from Alex. 2:22.9. 2:19.9 from Douglass. Alex still has to drop a couple seconds before I think she can beat King, but a nice drop.

statement made. she’s giving Lilly a race however Lilly can go far faster than she’s been this season. Be prepared for a big swim from Lilly at trials.
