Kate Douglass Swims 2:25.0 in the 200 Breast in a Post-Practice Time Trial

Cavalier Time Trial Results – Day 1

  • April 21-22, 2023
  • University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia
  • Long Course Meters (50 meters), timed finals/time trial
  • Day 1 Results

The Virginia Cavaliers were not among the many top college programs that participated in the Pro Swim Series meet in suburban Chicago last weekend, missing the first big long course racing opportunity post-NCAAs, but the coaching staff has created an intrasquad time trial this weekend to give their World Championship hopefuls a chance to suit up and swim some fast times.

The session wasn’t super formal – the team trained from 7-8 AM, then suited up and raced from 8:15-9:10 AM.

Among the highlights of the session was a 2:25.04 in the 200 meter breaststroke from Kate Douglass. While Douglass has not settled on a final program for this summer’s World Championships (her versatility gives her lots of options), she was the runner-up at last year’s Trials in the 200 breast in 2:21.43. She didn’t race between NCAAs and Trials that year, though the Trials meet was much earlier (late April rather than late June), so a whole different calendar was in play.

Douglass is still relatively-new to this event in long course – prior to last year’s Trials and Worlds, Douglass’ previous long course race was in 2019. She is the fastest swimmer in the yards version of the event, however. Virginia had a similar time trial event last year shortly after NCAAs, and Douglass was 2:24.02 – about a second faster – though we have to remember that last year’s timing was much different. In 2022, Trials were in late April, about a month after NCAAs. In 2023, Trials start in late June.

Race Videos:

Other swims from the team’s best international hopefuls include a 26.55 in the 50 fly and a 56.29 in the 100 free from Gretchen Walsh, a 2:01.14 in the 200 free from Alex Walsh, a 22.83 in the 50 free from August Lamb, a 51.67 in the 100 free from Matthew Brownstead, and a 51.70 in the 100 free from Connor Boyle.

Of those swims, Walsh’s 26.55 in the 50 fly was probably most impressive – especially given that she appears to be in a training suit for the swim. Race video of that swim is below:

Unfortunately just not going to have as much dominance LC as she did SC. 2:25 only? I could see 2:23 at worlds but won’t at all help beat out the russians. America just falling behind in swimming since we care more about who can go fast in a tiny little pool then how fast we can go with the big boys!

Nice to see Ella Nelson swimming, too. It pretty much solidifies that she will be coming back next year for the bonus 5th year, I would think. She hinted at that in an interview after NCs.

It would be interesting to know when they resumed training after NCAAs. One-two weeks ago?

I know they had at least a week off after NCAAs, so I’m assume they resumed training after that. Not entirely sure though.

I think Douglas will go under 220 this summer but 217 is extremely unlikely

Feels like this is a pretty good data point to contextualize her swim given that it was the same type of meet (UVA suited time trials) and around the same time (less than two weeks later in the year).

Except the female college student-athletes have fourteen (14) weeks to prepare for the 2023 Phillips 66 National Championships. The female college student-athletes have the luxury to go back to hard training prior to the 2023 Phillips 66 National Championships.

I should hope so. Kaylee doesn’t swim this event competitively, she just did it for fun.

I can think of one female in recent history who swam “slow” during the in-season.
