Canadian Katerine Savard swam to a sixth place finish in the final of the 50m butterfly in order to race to a new Canadian record, taking down Noemie Thomas’ 25.60 record that she set at the 2012 SC World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey.
Savard managed a 25.76 in the semifinal to squeeze in for the eighth spot, bettering that in finals with a very impressive 25.51. That time left her less than two-tenths of a second short of a medal here in Windsor.
Savard now holds both the long and short course versions of the national record in the 50m butterfly. This past summer, Savard broke the long course record twice. She was a 25.96 in June at the Coupe du Quebec before repeating that performance at a provincial meet in Quebec.
This is Savard’s first major international meet racing butterfly since the 2015 World Championships where she finished fifth overall in the 100m butterfly.
