Who more appropriate to break the first World Record of the 2013 FINA World Cup Series, which has high expectations coming just after the World Championships, than the reigning World Cup queen Katinka Hosszu.
Taking advantage of its early placement in the schedule, before embarking on an 11-events-in-2-days journey, Hosszu swam a 2:04.39 to break both the World Cup Record and the World Record in the women’s 200 short course meter IM on Wednesday in prelims, and position herself as the early favorite to once again dominate this series.
That broke the old World Record set by American Julia Smit in the waning days of the 2009 polyurethane suit era; Smit was a 2:04.60 at the 2009 Duel in the Pool in Manchester. The old World Cup Record was held by Evelyn Verraszto with a 2:06.01, also from 2009.
That World Record for Hosszu will net her an early $10,000 bonus, in addition to the $1,500 that it looks as though she is due to win for the event, and 10 bonus points toward a chance at the $40,000 European cluster prize.
The comparative splits to the old World Record:
Hosszu ’13 | Smit ’09 |
27.09 | 27.22 |
31.28 | 31.38 |
36.50 | 35.94 |
29.52 | 29.96 |
2:04.39 | 2:04.60 |
Do you know if Hosszu plans to have the same type of schedule next years?
Ok, 4 world records in the same day. But I repeat short course depresses me in August. In August the sun shines. It’s hot. I like watching the US junior nationals in an outside pool. Short course means winter for me.
Bobo, I was more impressed with Myles Brown from South Africa than with Yannick. What did you think?
You’re right. I didn’t even know Myles Brown! I’m just happy to see Yannick Agnel in a 400 free. He is far from his best shape and he swims this race. 3.37 is a very decent time in these conditions.
Great swim by Ranomi. Good 2nd place by Chantal van Landeghem.
Ranomi WR 50m free
23.24
Not a big margin but enough. 🙂
Wow! Kromo did WR
Always happy to see Ranomi happy! 🙂
Win for Yannick Agnel in the 400 free. 3.37.75 is a good time. Happy to see him again in this race.
She doesn’t know the word tired.
