Katinka Hosszu has broken the World Record in the women’s 200 short course meter IM on day 1 of the 2014 FINA World Cup stop in Doha, Qatar, earning a $10,000 World Record bonus in addition to all of the usual prizes.
She swam a 2:02.61 in the final, after there was no prelim due to a lack of entries, which broke the 2:03.20 that she swam at the Eindhoven World Cup on August 7th, 2013.
The comparative splits:
Hosszu Old World Record: 26.69 / 30.89 / 36.23 / 29.39 = 2:03.20
Hosszu New World Record: 26.94 / 30.27 / 36.33 / 29.07 = 2:02.61
Hosszu’s amazing endurance has gotten even better (probably aided by the decision to scratch the 100 fly final on Wednesday), and as we noted in our full recap, her backstroke continues to improve.
In total, Hosszu now has 7 out of the top 8 short course meters performances in history in this race, and this is the third-straight time she’s broken the World Record. Her margin on the rest of the world is almost a second (Japan’s Ami Nakada was a 2:03.4 in March of this year).
Lochte by far. What he did a few years ago in Istanbul was incredible.
Too bad he didn’t swim the 100free individually. He would have had no problem grabbing a silver medal in that event based on his relay splits. Only Morozov was faster at that meet
This meet was when I first started to think Lochte should focus on the 100 fly. He swam it for America in the medley relay and outsplit the Russian that won the individual event. He even dabbled and did the 50 breast at one of the short course world champion ship meets. Can’t remember which year, but I think he got 5th in the 50 breast or something like that.
You’re right, I remember that….it was the Dubai meet where he swam the fly leg on the relay. Great swim! Like I said, I think he was more impressive in the Dubai meet than the Istanbul meet…but it’s close!
exactly ! That’s where he broke , if i am not wrong , the 2 first SC World records ( 200 and 400 IM ) till this day , Lochte has the 3 IM World records in short course . It’s an indication of his greatness .
Hosszu also has 3 SCM IM WRs

Nathalie might be the best SCY swimmer in history, but definitely not SCM.
I would have considered Lochte, but he rarely participated in the world Cup series if at all.
So Hosszu it is. Her dominance in the world Cup series is unparalleled, the only one closer to her is moravcova.
Her mastery of swimming multiple events and medaling in each one of them at SCM is beyond compare.
LOCHTE ! In Istambul , he got 8 medals ! I don’t know of any swimmer to collect 8 medals in one short course world champs , maybe Coughlin but not sure . In Dubai in 2010 , he collected 6 if my memory is good . He might have got many more in other SC Championships … i can’t recall at this point .
7 medals in Dubai…would of been 8 but the 4×100 free relay did not finish in the medals surprisingly.
I think his Dubai performance was more impressive, but it was one of his “peak” years in his career. All of his individual swims at that meet set records of some sort (World, American, Championship…)
To answer the first question…so far Lochte by far has the best short course career.
On second thought, I shouldn’t say “by far.” If Katinka keeps this pace up over the next few years, she will likely have a comparable career to Lochte in short course. I am considering individual performances since Hungary doesn’t have the depth of the US to medal in every relay event.
Hosszu no question. Lochte had an amazing SC World Champs but he didn’t swim SCM near as often.
He may not have swum SCM that often, but he was utterly dominant in SCY at NCAAs.
Are we discussing SCY or SCM here?
