The Iron Lady Katinka Hosszu is one of the big stars on the Hungarian team that was announced today for the European Championships in London next month. Hosszu is the world record holder in the 200 IM in long course as well as in the short course 100 back, 200 back, 100 IM, 200 IM, and 400 IM. She’ll look to make a statement in London before she competes on the ultimate stage in Rio.
Laszlo Cseh is the biggest name on the men’s side, a seven-time Hungarian record holder in long course. He’s put up the world’s #5 time in the 100 fly and #3 time in the 200 fly so far this year.
Notably, Daniel Gyurta, the 2nd-fastest 200 breaststroker in history, is not among the top Hungarians competing at the European Championships. He’ll instead focus on his preparations for Rio.

This former refugee from Communist tyranny who returned to Hungary after living 50 years in the Unites States finds it hard to find words to express the admiration for Katinka Hosszu and her accomplishments. We have not seen anyone as talented and as dedicated as Katinka since Krisztina Egerszegi who was the greatest Hungarian swimmer 25 years ago.
My joy and admiration for Katinka is diminished by my sadness for the shabby treatment of her by the Hungarian Government, the Hungarian Swimming Association and a large part of Hungarian public because she refuses to be the slave of old Communist era types who would rather destroy the best of Hungary’s Olympic hope than to let her be herself.
She did win gold in London in Open Water swimming, but yes, she did stop her career for a couple of years and when came back.
Eva Ristov?
I didn’t know she was still in action.
Her name reminds me of huge intense battles with Yana Klochkova in 2002/2003.
Other thing: too bad swimswam has changed its comment’s system. If you don’t see many comments from my part in the future, it will be because of that change. Today it works so I take the opportunity to write a comment. But I have a problem with JavaScript only on swimswam which seriously bothers the navigation for several months. So to keep a correct navigation I need to block Java Script on the website. Problem: if I block JavaScript I can’t have access to that new comment’s system, unlike the previous.
