After Saturday’s conclusion of Hungary Nationals, the Hungarian Swimming Federation has announced their roster for the 2015 World Championships in Kazan, Russia. The team consists of 17 swimmers and 6 open water athletes.
Iron lady Katinka Hosszu is one of the toughest and most versatile swimmers in the world. Earlier this year, she broke the U.S. Open record in the 400 I.M., posting a 4:31.07 at the 2015 Arena Pro Swim Series Santa Clara, and before that broke the U.S. Open Record in the 200 I.M. as well. She’s the defending world champion in both medleys.
The Hungarian Swimming Federation has not yet announced Hosszu’s event schedule for worlds. They’re holding their cards in order to not give away her schedule. She currently sits in the world top-10 in the 200 free, 400 free, 100 back, 200 back, 200 I.M., and 400 I.M, and has the versatility to medal in all three events. While Hosszu has shown the ability to take on herculean schedules at in-season meets with much success, it’s unlikely that against the full tapers of the world’s best competition, she’ll be able to take on all 6 of the above individual events and defend her bronze medal in the 200 fly.
Hungarian Olympian Zsuzsanna Jakabos will compete in the 50m freestyle, 200m medley, and 400m medley. She was a finalist at 2013 worlds in the 200 I.M.
Veteran László Cseh will return to worlds for the Hungarian men, swimming the 50m butterfly, 100m butterfly, 200m butterfly, and 200m medley. He’s currently ranked 3rd in the 200 fly and 7th in the 200 I.M. Cseh has a long history of battling American Ryan Lochte in the individual medley, and will look to challenge him again in Kazan.
Breaststroker Daniel Gyurta will race in the 100 and 200 in Kazan. He’ll look to come out on top of a stacked field of breaststroke specialists, having already posted a 2:08.58 this year.

It looks like Hungary will have a pretty good medley relay (and probably also 4×200 relay) on both the male and female sides.
I don’t expect Hozzsu to swim any relays – but if any, maybe the 4×200 on Aug 6 because (1) a team of Hosszu, Jakobos, Verraszto, Kapas could swim ~7:52+, which could put them in an outside lane in the final, and (2) it’s an otherwise empty morning session for Hosszu (and if she skips 200 Fly, with only the 50 Back final that night.)
Hungary obviously has capable athletes, and has put together some strong relays in the past, but unless they have a relay that has a very good shot of making a final (much less finishing on the podium) you wont see Hosszu wasted on it. My guess would be 50, 100, 200 backstroke, 200 free, 200 fly and both of the IM’S
Pretty sure Katinka will swim the 50, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500 free, 100 and 200 fly, 100 and 200 back, 100 and 200 breast, 200 IM, and 400 IM. Maybe a few relays too.
I don’t think she could win 400, 800, 1500m if she has no chance to win. Ledecky would win gold medals in these 3 for sure.
I think the event in doubt is 200 fly. It hasn’t been great for her this year and Hungary has other 200 flyers that have been faster than her this year.
I reckon Hosszu will swim the 200m free, 100m & 200m back, 200m fly and 200m & 400m IM.
Hey Petriasfan, that’s what I had thought previously but with 3 swimmers already at 2:05 in the 2Fly do you think she will hold onto it? I could see her swimming prelims of all the races you mentioned, and/or maybe 400 free, but I suspect she might drop one or more of them after prelims or semis, unless she gets paid by her contracts just for swimming in a final. But that’s what she’s done before.
