2018 Speedo Grand Challenge
- May 25th-27th, 2018
- Irvine, California
- LCM
- Meet Central
- Psych Sheets (updated 5/24)
After a whirlwind 2018 so far, that includes what seemed to be the end of her relationship with coach and husband Shane Tusup that seems to be on the path to reconciliation, and a Japanese media tour that included welding her own Iron Lady logo, it seems that we might finally see Hungarian superstar swimmer Katinka Hosszu race this weekend in California. Hosszu appears on the psych sheets for this weekend’s Speedo Grand Challenge in Irvine, California, near where she went to college at USC.
Hosszu is a triple Olympic champion from 2016, having won the 100 back, 200 IM, and 400 IM at the Rio Olympic Games. For her encore last year in front of a home crowd in Budapest, she won gold in the 200 and 400 IM for the third consecutive World Championships.
This is a meet she’s raced many times before, though this year will be a bit different as she’s eschewed her previously unparalleled schedules and will instead only swim 6 races in the 3-day event. Her current schedule includes her specialties the 200 and 400 IM, and also the 100 and 200 backstroke. She’s also entered the 50 and 100 free, events that she’s swum less frequently than the others on her schedule (and rarely at global championships).
Hosszu’s last meet was at the Swim Cup Lausanne in Switzerland in December, a week after her 6 gold medal performance at the European Short Course Championships.
In spite of several ‘false-starts‘ and expected 2018 debuts that didn’t happen, Hosszu’s name still appears on the ‘revised’ edition of the psych sheets, so there’s hope.
Anthony Ervin is also expected to make his 2018 debut, having only raced at two stops of the FINA World Cup Series in the fall. The 2000 and 2016 Olympic Champion is entered in his specialty event, the 50 free, as well as the 100 free. In that 50 free, he’s scheduled to race Vlad Morozov, who was recently named to Russia’s team for the 2018 European Championships. He’s also scheduled to swim just the 50 and 100 frees.
Races at the meet will be split into age groups, with both races for swimmers aged 7-12, and open category age groups. US Masters Swimming also lists a sanction for the meet, meaning the USMS members are eligible to break National Records in Irvine.
Other noteworthy names:
- Most of the training group at Cal, both undergrad and post-grad, including Tom Shields, Ryan Murphy, Abbey Weitzeil, Amy Bilquist, Michael Jensen, Justin Lynch, Josh Prenot, Keaton Blovad, Matthew Josa, Katie McLaughlin, and Nick Norman.
- Most of the training group from Team Elite in San Diego (David Marsh’s group), including Katie Meili, Kendyl Stewart, Sarah Gibson, Ryosuke Irie from Japan, and Kathleen Baker (who is a Cal undergrad but trains with Marsh in the summers).
- U.S. National Teamer Will Licon, who will swim mthe 100 breast, 200 breast, 200 IM, and 400 IM
- A group from USC, including Anika Apostalon, Luca Spinazzola, Isabella Rongione, and Indonesian Olympian Siman Sudartawa
- Texas A&M All-American Brock Bonetti, a Bakersfield native and school record holder in the 100 and 200 backstrokes (and 4th in the 100 back at the 2017 U.S. Open)
- National Age Group Record holder Ronald Dalmacio, a 14-year old from Rose Bowl Aquatics
- Open Water National Champion Jordan Wilimovsky
- 13-year old Claire Tuggle, another National Age Group Record holder
Anthony Ervin is legend and social activity is good. He battle black rights. No politics. He is 37
What is it “black rights”?
Katinka should swim for USA
No thanks
Until her marital issues, she was the world top female swimmer. She is US educated. I am sure that US swimming federation would be happy to have her. USC is proud of her accomplishments.
What have you done that makes any difference to anyone?
Why? Does Hungary have no use of her anymore?
She never got the respect she deserves
Where is Dwyer? At least he didn’t enter and then scratched!
He going to Costa Rica. Vacation time. The guy has been working non stop.
Uhh if you say so.
I completely lost any respect for Ervin when he brought his politics into swimming. I hate that crap.
Exactly!
I will point out that you were the first person to bring Ervin’s politics into this comment section, so if it bothers you, might be time to re-evaluate that decision.
yeah, its the first time i hear about Ervin bringing politics into swimming, now im intrigue… 🙂
I might be wrong but I think Ervin knelt during the national anthem which caused a ruckus. Don’t quote me though
I agree with you. Disgrace.
“The 36-year-old swimmer took a knee on Sunday after he anchored Team USA’s mixed 200-meter medley relay race in Brazil.”
Because the selection decision for the 2019 World Championships will be made during this year Claire Tuggle has been left no choice but to get on the National Team this season at the age of 13. Therefore each of her meets is of high interest. She was great in Dublin a month ago. Let’s see if the following 7 weeks made her even better.
Can’t wait to see Tuggle back in action!
Agree. There is much more interest in the progress of 13 years old blooming girl than in the level of decline of 29 years old iron lady.
As of today Claire Tuggle is
#6 in 200FR
#5 in 400FR
#9 in 800FR
among American swimmers.
I think people are more curious to know if she is still with Shane.
Nope
She must have seen my post cause she posted on her FB
I would like to get ahead of the gossips, sadly Shane and I haven’t been able to resolve our personal issues, therefore we are no longer working together. I’m still preparing for the upcoming competitions while looking at my options for my support team.
“Blooming girl” is a skin crawlingly, creepy description.
You are more than welcome to come up with something better with your powerful SAT vocabulary. But whatever description you choose it will be for sure better than “rusty iron”. Sorry you didn’t get my point because of deficiencies of my English. But don’t worry, I will improve. Just be patient 😀
Just don’t use “blooming”, it’s got massive overtones of Humbert Humbert.
Stick to “improving” or words that can describe her swimming, not her physique.
In this case it was about physique: young girl who is on the rise vs declining “old” lady who could be almost her mother.
Ok, I’ll put it more bluntly, “blooming” suggests you find her physically attractive. Given she is 13, that is really creepy sounding.
I got it. Thank you. One never knows how his/her writing can resonate in someone else’s imagination 😀
Isn’t it funny that you are giving a lecture in English by referring to the novel written by famous Russian writer. You may not even noticed that you have been influenced in some way by Russian culture . That is how languages are gotten mixed.
I think Katinka has been training with Trojan the last couple weeks so she should show up!
I would be real surprised if Licon swims the 4im. Just a gut feeling. It looks like a good lineup!
