Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu crossed a major barrier on day 1 of the Beijing World Cup, becoming the first swimmer in World Cup history to surpass 200 total medals, according to circuit organizer FINA.
FINA tweeted out a congratulations to Hosszu, who has won the World Cup series three years running and should easily win her fourth title this season as she holds a dominating points lead. In fact, Hosszu could skip the entire third cluster of meets and still be in the hunt for the win, though she’ll likely continue to follow the money through the tour’s conclusion.
@HosszuKatinka (HUN) took her 200th #SWC medal today and became the first #swimmer in any gender to reach this mark. CONGRATS to #IronLady!

The record-breaking day was actually a bit of a disappointing one for Hosszu, who struggled to break through for a win in her three separate silver-medal races, but finally erupted for a dominating 200 IM win to add a gold on the day.
Hosszu is also the World Cup’s all-time leader in gold medals. She entered this season with 122 golds, per FINA, and by our count has won 17 more through the first day in Beijing. The second-winningest all-time is retired Slovakian Olympian Martina Moravcova at 105 golds.
Hosszu leads the 2015 World Cup with 291 points heading into Beijing, with Australia’s Emily Seebohm second at 168. The World Cup has four more stops after Beijing: Singapore, Tokyo, Doha and Dubai.
DOMINATION!!
Don’t you mean four more stops? 🙂
