Ajax swimmer Kayla Sanchez is slaughtering the record books at the short course Ontario Provincial Championships is London, Ont. With only two days of competition underway at the meet, Sanchez has been able to come home with a remarkable four Canadian age-group records in the 11-12 category.

Sanchez broke her own record in the 100m backstroke last night with a time of 1:02.85 to grab the silver medal in the girls 13&under final. Sanchez set the previous record of 1:03.36 at the Speedo Eastern Canadian Championships, an event where she along with her teammates at Ajax Swimming set two new age-group records in the girls 13-14 4x100m and 4x50m medley relays.

The record that she broke at Easterns was set by Toronto Swim Club’s Peny Oleksiak last year. Oleksiak, 13, won last nights 100m backstroke final in 1:02.25 just ahead of Sanchez.

Sanchez came home with a gold medal last night in the 50m freestyle on her way to breaking the Canadian age-group record of 26.34. The 50m freestyle record is tied for one of the oldest standing Canadian age-group records in the books being set back in 1985 by Ajax swimmer Lori Melien. Sanchez was just under the mark with a 26.29.

Tonight Sanchez struck again, this time in the 200m freestyle. Sanchez swam a 2:04.77 to break Alexndra Gabor’s record of 2:04.88 from 2006. Sanchez came second in the final to Penny Oleksiak who won the event in 2:04.49.

Sanchez also led off tonight’s winning 4x100m freestyle relay in a new Canadian age-group record of 57.26. That swim broke Ajax swimmer Lori Melien’s record of 57.36 set back in 1985. With her fourth record of the meet Sanchez completely erased two of Canada’s oldest age-group records.

Sanchez will be swimming the 100m freestyle and 200m backstroke to cap off the next two days of competition. The 200m backstroke will be the toughest event for Sanchez to break the age-group record. Sanchez swam a best time of 2:21.09 at Easterns, the record stands at 2:17.96.
