Kaylee McKeown Clocks 2:07.54 200 IM As The #2 Time Of Her Career

2023 QUEENSLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS

Olympic multi-champion Kaylee McKeown was back in the water on day four of the 2023 Queensland Championships and the 22-year-old proved once again she can swim fast in-season.

McKeown put an exclamation point on the session with a swift 200m IM time of 2:07.54. That got her to the wall over 5 seconds ahead of the competition, with Jenna Forrester touching in 2:12.95 for silver and Ella Ramsay hitting 2:13.45 for bronze.

McKeown’s statement-making performance checks in as her 2nd-best 200m IM outing ever, sitting only behind her 2:07.19 notched at this year’s Sydney Open. Four of her five swiftest swims in this event have been put up this year.

Kaylee McKeown‘s Top 5 LCM 200 IM Performances

  1. 2:07.19 – 2023 Sydney Open
  2. 2:07.54 – 2023 Queensland Championships
  3. 2:07.60 – 2023 Australian Trials
  4. 2:08.16 – 2023 Australian Championships
  5. 2:08.19 – 2021 Australian Trials

A split comparison between McKeown’s 2:07.19 PB and tonight’s result is as follows. She was ahead of her time on the fly, relatively even on the back but her last 2 legs were slower.

Fly 27.58 27.88
Back 32.08 31.95
Breast 37.26 37.03
Free 30.62 30.33
2:07.54 2:07.19

McKeown’s effort this evening would have rendered her the silver medalist at this year’s World Championships. Unfortunately for McKeown, she was disqualified in Fukuoka for her back-to-breast crossover turn.

And Short and Winnington very good 800s for December both going sub 7:50. I wonder if Winnington is gonna seriously pursue this event?

Huge surprise from Julia Remington !! Just did a six second PB (2:27.73) to upset Hayley Mackinder (2:28.84) in the 200 breast. Looks like she’s only barely 16.

From my analysis seems like she was 15 at a meet in mid November

No surprise for me re: Remington. She won the 13 years 200m breast at age nationals, then the 14 years 200m breast. Missed out this year as a 15yo to Mackinder but won other age titles this year.
Both her and Olympia Pope were originally taught how to breaststroke by the same coach.

Some more promising signs in the girls 200 breast with 16 yr olds going 2:27 and 2:28

At NSW champs Simpson went 51.8 100 fly and B Campbell 24 mid 50 free. One to keep an eye on is Abbey Webb at this stage a long shot but has a wide range of events.

I’ll try again without links cos the other got stuck in the spam filter.

Matt Temple broke the SCM 100 fly NR in a time trial clocking 48.62. Are time trials even recognised for national records?

Ooooh interesting.

I’m pretty sure FINA recognises time trials as world records (at least they have in the past) so can’t imagine why it wouldn’t count

Two second PB for Barclay in the 200 free. Anyone know if Barclay is still in the junior program at STPW or has she moved to train with Boxall?

Morning sessions with Juniors; Arvo sessions with Dean. Jaclyn & juniors tapered for State. Seniors in hard work getting absolutely flogged, even swimming 2 x Saturday sessions right before State Champs. So some of their times are very promising for later next year when they’ll be rested. Competition breeds success!

That was a subjective decision .. the American should have been DQed but wasn’t for obvious reasons

You sound like Pat Mahomes. Her turn wasnt even close to legal.

Alex Walsh’s was about 10x more egregious and she got a free pass

Yes, unbelievable how they didn’t pick up Walsh’s turn. And that cost Jenna Forrester a 2nd bronze medal.

You’re proving my point. How Walsh got away with fully turning onto her stomach I’ll never know, but that doesn’t mean what McKeown did was legal
