Keire Wins Double as Cincinnati Tops Xavier, Cleveland State

Cincinnati topped Cleveland State and Xavier this weekend in a tri-meet at home on both the men’s and women’s sides. The Bearcats’ Honorable Mention All American Jacqueline Keire grabbed the 200 free win in 1:49.00. She followed that up with another win in the 100 IM at 59.03.

CINCINNATI — The University of Cincinnati swimming and diving teams secured sweeps of Xavier and Cleveland State on Friday night at the Keating Aquatics Center. The Bearcats scored 14 individual victories against their crosstown rivals and in-state foes.

// WOMEN SWEEP FREESTYLE EVENTS

On the women’s side, the Bearcats swept the freestyle events. The day started with Sara Wanasek (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) collecting a victory in the 1,000 free with a time of 10:30.66. The 200 freestyle was next, with Jacqueline Keire (Burlington, Ont./Nelson) winning in 1:49.06.

Keire continued her strong evening in the 50 free, touching the wall in 23.27, 1.39 seconds ahead of Xavier’s Clarie Brolsma. Freshman Amanda Deller (Fairfield, Ohio/McAuley) got in on the act in the 100 freestyle, which Keire sat out, taking the event with a time of 53.34.

Wanasek then finished the sweep she started by winning the 500 free in 5:06.93.

// BREADY LEADS MEN ON FREESTYLE

Chris Bready (Missouri City, Texas/Lawrence E. Elkins) earned a victory in the 1,000 freestyle, finishing in 9:16.76, winning by nearly 50 seconds. He followed that up with a runner-up finish in the 500 freestyle, clocking in at 4:32.65, just four seconds behind Cleveland State’s MacJilton Lewis.

The Bearcats also collected a one-two finish in the 200 freestyle, with Connor Davis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) touching at 1:42.41, just ahead of Justin Crew (Springfield, Ohio/Shawnee) who finished in 1:44.04.

// WOMEN SWEEP BACKSTROKE

The Bearcats won both women’s backstroke events. Lindsey Niehaus (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) won the 100 backstroke in 56.88. The 200 backstroke saw Tal Kidron (Tsurit, Israel/Hof HaSharon) collect first-place points in 2:05.66.

// EASY AS 1-2-3 & 1-2-3-4 FOR WOMEN IN BREASTSTROKE

Cincinnati collected a one-two-three finish int he 100 breaststroke. Kennedy Herbert (Green, Ohio/Green) won with a mark of 1:05.90. She was followed by Carlie Perretta (Canton, Ohio/Perry) in 1:05.99 and Enna Selmanovic(Mississauga, Ont./Clarkson Secondary) in 1:06.56.

It was even better in the 200 breaststroke, with a one-two-three-four finish. Selmanovic was first this time, clocking in at 2:23.12. Dee Sopapong (Tampa, Fla./Wharton) was second at 2:23.73, then Andrea Bartel (Euclid, Ohio/Euclid) at 2:24.21 and Geraldine Huffner (Sainte Clotilde, France/Font Romeu) at 2:24.45.

// 100 INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY DEBUT

The meet featured the 100 individual medley for the first time. Keire earned a first-place finish in the women’s event, touching at 59.03. She was followed by Sopapong in 1:01.30 and Caroline Sheehan (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) at 1:01.66.

The top finisher for UC on the men’s side was Tyler Roehr (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove), who placed second with a time of 53.64.4

// BEARCATS ON THE BOARD

UC saw its women go one-two on the one-meter board. Ellen Posch (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) placed first with a score of 243.15. Tori Ritter (Littleton, Colo./Rock Canyon) was second with a mark of 231.50. Louis Hunt (Lakeside Park, Ky./Covington Catholic) was the top finisher on the men’s side, placing second with a score of 247.30.

On the three-meter board, Posch again collected the victory, this time with a score of 245.55. Hunt was again the top finisher for the men in second place with a mark of 262.75.

// UP NEXT

The Bearcats face a busy weekend with a pair of meets. On Friday, Oct. 23, UC travels to Huntington, West Virginia, to face Marshall and VMI. The next day, Saturday, Oct. 24, Cincinnati visits former conference rival Louisville.

Xavier:

CINCINNATI – The Xavier swimming program opened a busy weekend by traveling across town to Cincinnati to face the Bearcats, as well as Cleveland State. A number of Musketeers posted strong performances in the first of two meets this weekend.

The Musketeer women opened the meet by taking third in the 200 medley relay withPaxtyn Drew, Haley Dresner, Annie Cummins and Claire Brolsma posting a time of 1:49.55

To open individual events, Mackenna Rife posted a time of 10:39.08 to take third in the 1,000 free. Rife collected another top-three finish in the 500 free, posting a time of 5:08.68 to take second. Freshman Katie Kerr followed Rife in, upping her 16th fastest time in XU history to 2:08.23 to take fifth.

In the freestyle sprints, Claire Brolsma led the way, taking second in the 50 free with a time of 24.66.

In the 100 back, freshman Caroline Gaertner led the Musketeers with a second place finish with a time of 58.43. Sophomore Paxtyn Drew followed her in with a time of 59.17 to take fourth.

Drew led the way for Xavier in the 200 back, taking second with a time of 2:06.99. Gaertner touched the wall in 2:08.23 to take third and up her 14th fastest time in Xavier records. Laura Dicus also posted a top-20 time in the 200 back, coming in at 19th fastest with a time of 1:00.39 to finish sixth.

In the 100 fly, Annie Cummins upper her Xavier best time from 16th to 11th with a time of 58.87, good for fourth place.

In the 200 fly, Maggie Kauffeld moved up to 15th in XU history with a time of 2:11.86. Jenna Wilkes entered school records for the event at 20th with a time of 2:12.82.

The Musketeer women closed the event with by taking the top spot in the 200 free relay. Brolsma, Drew, Molly Ford and Dicus posted a time of 1:39.16 to take first.

The Musketeer men opened the meet in the same manner as the women, taking third in the 200 medley relay with Erik Biernat, Michael Pettinichi, Tony Miller and Luke Johannsposting a time of 1:34.42.

Nick Strader opened the individual events for the men by taking third in the 1,000 free with a time of 10:00.52. Alex Wolfred collected a pair of third place finishes in the 200 free (1:44.55) and the 500 free (4:41.58).

In the freestyle sprints, Luke Johanns took home the top spot in the 50 yard free, posting a time of 20.79. Johanns also grabbed a top three finish in the 100 free, finishing third with a time of 46.96, coming in just behind second place Rodrigo Suriano‘s time of 46.44

In the 100 back, Erik Biernat entered the Xavier records with the 18th fastest time in school history, touching the wall in 53.53.

In the 100 breaststroke, Michael Pettinichi used a time of 58.83 to enter Xavier’s records at 14th fastest. Pettinichi also moved up to the 17th fastest in the 200 breast with at time 2:11.24, coming in just behind Robert Van Kirk who posted a time of 2:11.13.

Like the women the men closed out the event with a first place finish. Luke Johanns, Suriano, Enrique Hernandez and Miller posted a time of 1:23.67 to take the top spot in the 200 free relay.

Xavier returns to action tomorrow with a trip to Miami at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center. Events are set to begin at 2:00 p.m. Stay tuned to GoXavier.com for results.

Cleveland State:

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Cleveland State swimmimg and diving teams opened their season on Friday night at the University of Cincinnati’s Keating Aquatics Center.

The Vikings were part of a tri-meet with Cincinnati and Xavier.

For the men, several had top performances including 11 first-place finishes in various events, led by Philipp Sikatzki and Danny Roberts, both picking up where they left off a season ago. Sikatzki had top individual times in the 100 Back (49.34), 100 Free (46.15) and 100 IM (51.65) and also held a leg in CSU’s winning 200 Medley Relay team that posted a final time of 1:31.51. Roberts finished at the top of the group in both the 1M and the 3M dives with scores of 301.35 and 263.50 respectively.

The night was also highlighted by the performance of numerous freshmen competing in their first collegiate meet. Freshmen Szymon Golczyk, Tommi Wolst and MacJilton Lewis all had at least one top finish apiece. Golczyk, also a part of the winning 200 Medley team, took first place in the 200 Fly (1:50.45) and 100 Fly (48.87). Like Golczyk and Sikatzki, Wolst was a part of the 200 Medley team and also finished atop the leaderboard in the 100 Breast (56.11) and the 200 Back (1:51.01). Lewis won the 500 Free with a time of 4:28.85.

Declan McLaughlin was the final leg of the winning 200 Medley team.

On the women’s side, freshman Molly McNamara finished atop two individual events; the 200 Fly (2:06.10) and the 100 Fly (57.41). Samantha Sposet and Tori Taffner both had strong diving performances as Sposet finished third in the 1M Dive (226.40) and fourth in the 3M Dive (221.35) and Tori Taffner finished second in the 3M Dive (228.45).

The swimming and diving teams will be back in action this weekend when the women head to Youngstown State on Friday (Oct. 23) and both teams will host Gannon the following Saturday (Oct. 24), beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Busbey Natatorium.
