Kenya Announces 5 Swimmers For Gold Coast

The nation of Kenya announced its 5-swimmer strong squad to compete at the 2018 Commonwealth Games set for the Gold Coast, Australia in April. Sylvia Brunlehner, Issa Abdallah-Mohammed and Steven Kimani Maina are repeating performers from the 2014 edition of the Games, while Sylvia’s sister Maria Brunlehner and Emily Muteti will be first-timers.

Brunlehner’s highest finish in 2014 came as 18th place in the 50 free, while Abdallah-Mohammed finished 22nd in the 100 fly and Kimani Maina snagged 17th in the 200 back.

The squad numbers much less than the 2014 Commonwealth Games, whose roster totaled 13 swimmers, including Jason Dunford.  Dunford was the first Kenyan swimmer to ever win a medal at the Commonwealth Games, taking home the gold medal in the men’s 50m butterfly in 2010. Dunford finished 7th in the 100 fly in Glasgow.

As a nation, Kenya nabbed 25 medals overall in Glasgow, with 23 of them stemming from track and field athletes, including 10 gold.
