Kenyon College Belly Flop Contest

It was a perfectly ordinary Friday in Gambier – everyone was up with the sun (or before), then went about their school days. But the afternoon practice had something special in store. After a very challenging aerobic workout, the assistant coaches organized – and made mandatory – a team-wide belly flop contest. The Lords and Ladies each competed in their own divisions, and the competition was on.

Part of me wishes I had been there – but some of those smacks sound so painful I’m glad I wasn’t! So here it is – the good and the bad, the ugly and the truly spectacular.

The Kenyon Lords finished first at the NCAA championships in 2013, and the Kenyon Ladies were runners-up.

Very well done ladies and gentlemen of Kenyon College. This endorsement comes from someone who considers himself an expert of the bellyflop. Keep it fun and painful…

The belly flops were better in the full body suit era.

Were divers eligible to compete?!?

Not sure if they would be awesome (because of their aerial body awareness skills) or terrible (because belly flopping goes against everything they’ve ever practiced).

Ha! The squeals of ow! at 2:45 were priceless. Shadenfreude.
