Kenzo Simons Takes Down Kolesnikov’s WJR In SC 50 Free

2019 DUTCH SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS

While competing on the final day of the 2019 Dutch Short Course Championships, 18-year-old Kenzo Simons fired off a new World Junior Record in the men’s 50m freestyle.

In this morning’s heats in Tilburg, Simons produced a super quick outing of 21.16 to take the top seed over former World Champion Jesse Puts and the rest of the competitors. Simons’ time overtook the previous WJR of 21.24 that Russian dynamo Kliment Kolesnikov registered at the 2017 edition of the European Short Course Championships.

Entering this morning’s heats in Tilburg, Simons’ personal best sat at the 21.44 he put up in Belgium last month. This summer, Simons represented the Netherlands at the European Junior Championships where he logged a time of 22.10 in long course to register a new personal best in that format as well.

For Simons’ time of 21.16 this morning sits just .11 outside of the Dutch national record of 21.05 Puts established 3 years ago. That was after Puts took the gold in Windsor at the Short Course World Championships in 21.10.

Simons would have placed 7th in the Hangzhou at the 2018 World Short Course Championships and 6th at this year’s European Short Course Championships.

Unfortunately Puts hasn’t been able to hit the times he wants tho. But Nyls and Kenzo do look very promising!

Luc Kroon, especially in LC, may be a valuable asset also in the 100 free.

Kroon also broke the 800 SC national record this weekend, swimming a 7.44. Next to a 3.40 on the 400.
