The first session of the 2014 Ohio State Swimming and Diving Invitational is now underway at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. This year, the seven participating teams include Kentucky, Kenyon, Ohio State, Purdue, Wisconsin, Miami (diving only), and Virginia (diving only). Friday’s prelims began at 11 am, and the finals session is scheduled for tonight at 6 pm.
Friday’s event order is as follows:
500 Free
200 IM
50 Free
Men’s 1-Meter Diving
Women’s 3-Meter Diving
Tonight’s finals will also include the 200 Freestyle Relay and the 400 Medley Relay, at the beginning and end of the session respectively.
Prelims Recap:
In the Women’s 500 Freestyle, Purdue junior Nika Petric leads the field with a time of 4:45.34. She is followed by her teammate, Purdue freshman Abby Jagdfel, who was close behind Petric with a time of 4:45.98. In the Men’s 500 Freestyle, Wisconsin sophomore Matthew Hutchins claimed the top time of the morning in 4:23.43. In second is another Wisconsin swimmer, senior Nick Caldwell in 4:24.40.
In the Women’s 200 IM, the top two times belonged to Kentucky sophomore Danielle Galyer (2:00.47) and Wisconsin senior Aja Van Hout (2:01.10). In the Men’s 200 IM, Drew Teduits, a senior from Wisconsin, claimed first in 1:48.40. Just .08 behind him was Ohio State senior Steven Zimmerman.
Ivy Martin, a senior at Wisconsin, was the only woman under the 22-second barrier in the 50 Freestyle. Martin’s time of 21.97 led the field, followed by Kentucky senior Christina Bechtel in 22.54. In the Men’s 50 Freestyle, the Ohio State sprinters were dominant. Ohio State junior Josh Fleagle took first, breaking the 20-second barrier in 19.75. No other man at this session was under 20 seconds. Michael Disalle, an Ohio State sophomore, is in second (20.35) closely followed by Ohio State senior Matt McHugh (20.38).
