Kim Williams downs two state records, Washington 3A title goes to Lakeside

After rattling two state records a year ago, Bellevue senior Kim Williams broke through in 2014, breaking the Class 3A record in the 200 IM and the overall state record in the 100 breast.

Williams, a Stanford commit, won three total events on the day in dominating fashion. She won the 200 IM by nearly five seconds. Her 2:00.35 chopped about a second off the state record she set two years ago as a sophomore.

Williams was also 1:01.80 to crush the 100 breast field. That took down the 3A and overall state records both set at 1:02.00 from Lindsay Marchand in 2008.

Departing from breaststroke, Williams actually swam backstroke on Bellevue’s state championship 200 medley relay, splitting 26.53 to put her team in the lead. Christina McDermott, Naomi Ngo and Hannah Walsh closed out the relay, which went 1:48.55.

Seattle Prep sophomore Cameron Smith also broke a 2A state record. Smith defended her 500 free title in 4:55.21, breaking the record in the longest event by the narrowest of margins – she was just .02 faster than the old record set by Andie Taylor in 2007.

It was Lakeside that took the overall team title, led by wins in three of the final four events. That included both free relays and the 100 back, which went to junior Emily Prentice in 59.56.

On either side of Prentice’s victory, Lakeside won big relay events. First, it was Caroline Wagner, Helen Teegan, Hannah Shabb and Abby Wagner who won the 200 free relay in 1:37.38, keying on a 24.26 leadoff leg from Caroline Wagner. That was just two tenths away from the state record for a relay made up of three juniors and a sophomore. Caroline Wagner, the sophomore, would anchor the winning 400 free relay in 52.80, joining Amber Chong, Addie Chambers and Shabb to go 3:34.55.

Garfield’s Marley Cross doubled up, winning both sprint freestyle events. Cross, a junior, won the 50 free in 23.73 and also took the 100 free with a 51.26.

With 2013 state champ McKenna Briggs departed to class 2A in the state’s reclassifictions, there was a tie atop the 100 fly, with Holy Names sophomore Sophia Chien and Mercer Island junior Sabrina Kwan each going 57.66. Chien went out fastest, leading by about a tenth, but Kwan ran her down to force the tie late.

Mercer Island also got an individual win from senior Leah Fisk, who won the 200 free in 1:50.64. The other individual winner was Marysville Getchell’s Brooke Wherley, who took the 1-meter diving event in her senior season.
