Kira Toussaint Sets European Record In 50 Backstroke

EINDHOVEN QUALIFICATION MEET (NED)

About 24 hours after notching an Olympic-qualifying time in the women’s 200m backstroke, Kira Toussaint threw down the fastest 50m backstroke time of her life.

While competing on day 2 of this Eindhoven Qualifying Meet, the two-time European Short Course champion pumped out a big-time 27.18. That not only overtook her own previous Dutch national record of 27.27 from just last December, but it also surpassed the European Record of 27.21. That previous mark was set by Great Britain’s Georgia Davies back at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

With her massive 27.18 result here at Eindhoven prelims, Toussaint now ranks as the world’s 5th fastest performer all-time with the final yet to go.

All-Time Women’s LCM 50 Backstroke Performers

  1. Liu Xian (CHN), 26.98 2018
  2. Zhao Jing (CHN), 27.06, 2009
  3. Fu Yuanhui (CHN), 27.11, 2015
  4. Etient Medeiros (BRA), 27.14 2017
  5. Kira Toussaint (NED), 27.18, 2021

Performance-wise, Toussaint’s time checks-in as the 8th fastest ever, tying Fu Yuanhui and Etiene Medeiros who also nabbed that same result in previous competitions.

Wasn’t the 27.21 by Davies at 2018 Europeans?

Regardless, happy for Kira! Looks promising for her 100 now too
