Russian Kirill Prigoda took down the Russian 100 breast record tonight in the final in Budapest, going 59.05 for his third national record this week already.
Prigoda first broke the Russian mark in prelims, going 59.36 to pip Anton Chupkov‘s 59.39 record. Then, in semifinals, he lowered that to a 59.24, which was just good enough to get him into tonight’s final at 8th. The outside lane didn’t matter to him, though, as he charged out to a very strong first 50 and held on to grab the bronze in 59.05, ending up much faster than his pre-meet personal best of 59.60.

Prigoda kept going out just a bit faster each round, really punching the gas the first 50 of his swim in finals. Russia is looking very good in the breaststroke right now– Prigoda (born 1995) was joined by Vzevolod Zanko in semifinals, with both going under 1:00 though Zanko did not make the final. Meanwhile, in the 200, Ilya Khomenko and Anton Chupkov are two favorites to final, with Chupkov having a shot at a medal.
