We saw the first national record go down on night 2 of the 2021 European Championships, courtesy of 20-year-old Anastasia Kirpichnikova of Russia.
Competing in tonight’s women’s 800m freestyle event, Kirpichnikova clocked a time of 8:21.86, slicing just under half a second off of her own previous Russian standard of 8:22.65. She produced that previous time last December while racing in France.
Tonight, her new lifetime best of 8:21.86 snagged the silver medal behind winner and 2018 European Champion Simona Quadarella of Italy. Quadarella repeated gold here in Budapest in a time of 8:20.23, while Russian teammate Anna Egorova rounded out the top 3 in 8:26.56.
A split comparison between Kirpichnikova’s previous swim and tonight’s effort reveal how the Russian bided her time a little bit more on the front end, with her former record’s halfway split checking in at 4:09.75 to tonight’s 4:10.38.
Quadarella enters the season’s world rankings now as the 3rd fastest swimmer in the world while Kirpichnivkoa is right behind as the 4th quickest this season.

2 | Ariarne Titmus | AUS | 8:13.83 | 07/31 |
3 | Katie Grimes | USA | 8:17.05 | 07/29 |
4 | Simona Quadarella | ITA | 8:17.32 | 07/29 |
5 | Sarah Koehler | GER | 8:17.33 | 07/29 |
We will definitely see this girl in Olympic final.
We can anticipate an exciting race between Quadarella and Kirpichnikova at 1500. Quadarella has almost 20sec advantage in personal best and Kirpichnikova just broke 16 min at Trials. But it was also a national record and she improves with each race this season.
Can be an interesting competition to be a European champion. Quadarella isn’t in her 15:40 form now but Kirpichnikova is on the move.
