Russian Kliment Kolesnikov improved on his world junior record in the semi-finals of the men’s 100 IM, putting up a time of 50.90 to get under his 51.35 set last month at the Russian Championships in Kazan.

The 18-year-old was the quickest swimmer in either semi on the opening 50 in 22.90, and was 3rd fastest coming home in 28.00 for the top seed for tomorrow night’s final. He sits over half a second clear of #2 qualifier Marco Orsi (51.42) of Italy, who set a new National Record himself.

With the swim he moves up from 14th into 5th all-time in the event, including passing countryman Sergey Fesikov (who formerly held the world record at 50.95), and his 50.90 also stands up as the 20th fastest performance in history. He is also the 7th swimmer to ever break 51 seconds.

Another one of his Russian teammates Vladimir Morozov is the current world record holder in the event at 50.26, and he also owns the ten fastest swims in history. However, Morozov hasn’t entered the event in Hangzhou, choosing to focus on the 50 free, so Kolesnikov would have to be the favorite for gold tomorrow, with his biggest challenge likely coming from defending champion Michael Andrew of the United States.

ALL-TIME PERFORMERS, MEN’S 100 IM

  1. Vladimir Morozov (RUS), 50.26
  2. Markus Deibler (GER), 50.66
  3. Ryan Lochte (USA), 50.71
  4. Peter Mankoc (SLO), 50.76
  5. Kliment Kolesnikov (RUS), 50.90
