Russian junior Kliment Kolesnikov posted a 1:55.15 in the men’s 200 back final in Budapest, breaking his own world junior record in the race. His previous record was a 1:55.49, done at the 2017 Russian Nationals this spring.

27.03 – 29.04 – 29.67 – 29.41
Kolesnikov split this very well, going out strong and then holding on for three pretty similar splits the rest of the way. His time of 1:55.15 gets him in to the final easily, putting him 4th behind his Russian teammate Evgeny Rylov.
Kolesnikov, who just turned 17 a few weeks ago, has looked very good this week in Budapest. In the 100 back, he finished 9th in the semifinals in a tie with China’s Li Guangyuan. In that swim-off for the first reserve spot, Kolesnikov swam a 53.38 to take a chunk out of his own WJR in that race (previously a 53.65).
The best young backstroker in the country right now, Kolesnikov holds world junior records in the 50, 100 and 200 backstrokes. He will contest the final tomorrow night at the beginning of the session with an outside shot at a medal.
