Kliment Kolesnikov put up a 1:55.49 in the 200 back yesterday at the 2017 Russian Championships to take down the 1:56.79 JWR mark set by Li Guangyuan of China at the FINA World Championships in Kazan in 2015. Kolesnikov’s swim set a junior world record by well over a second.

Kolesnikov finished second to Evgeny Rylov, who swam 1:53.81 for the fastest time in the world this year. Kolesnikov’s time was fast enough for third in the world this year. Both swimmers made the Russian World Championships squad in the event, so they will both have the chance to fight for the world championship title this July.

Kolesnikov now holds the junior world records in all three long course backstroke events. His 50 mark is a 24.94 from the 2016 European Junior Championships, and his 100 mark is a 53.65 from the same meet.

Have anyone gone through to see what Jr WR would be if older times were included (since they go by year of birth, not date of birth)?
Lots of WJRs broken the past few days. It’s probably a product of swimming being a faster and more competitive stroke, and I think we’re seeing the first generation of swimmers who were really inspired by Phelps. That goes for the recent NCAAs too.
